The Dick Van Dyke show isn't dated like most sitcoms...the situations are still relevant and the writing was top notch.

I was talking to my mother-in-law about the show a month ago and she said the same thing. She mentioned how it stood out from the other hit family oriented shows of it's time like "Leave It To Beaver," and "Donna Reed," and also popular repeats of "I Love Lucy," and "Father Knows Best." She's only 61, but she said she was a big fan of the the show when it was being aired, and that even then it had a reputation for being cutting edge, hip, and very modern.

Id say its because we still have families with small boys who run around the house; people like "Buddy" Sorrell, who love to kid around, but are basically good people underneath; lonely women like Sally and people like Mel that tend to bring out the worst in some people...its a microcasm of society, most shows that are truly successful like MASH or Mary's MTM show are like that.

It holds up for one reason and one reason only- sheer brilliance all around from the actors to the creator to the producers, hell even to the clean-up crew!

It was one of the best written sitcoms of all-time and the situations are still relevant in 2006. Also, Carl Reiner ordered the writers not to use "conteporary slang" since he didn't want to date the show in reruns.
