Yet Another Plot Inconsistency

In the episode where Sophia's brother Angelo visits for the first time, he confesses to Sophia that he's not a priest like she always thought. He says that in 1914, he made a promise to his dying mother that he'd become a priest and didn't want to bring shame to the family by admitting the truth.

Okay, so Sophia's mother died in 1914? When Sophia was roughly 8 years old? And then she was somehow still alive in the flashback episode when Sophia was married and living in Brooklyn?

Also, Angelo says he was married for 72 years? That would make him at least 90 at the time of the episode and maybe 95 when the series ended. Possible, yes -- but the whole thing seems very unlikely to me.

The time periods of Sophia's life never made sense. Her "Picture It" stories never had rhyme or reason to the dates.

As you can probably tell from watching The Golden Girls, the writers and producers didnt pay too much attention to continuity. If you try to sort out the characters' back stories, from watching the show, it will drive you crazy.
