I recall an episode regarding a convent and some stranger (man) came along asking for work and food. He made them a wooden spiral staircase and as mysteriously as he appeared, he left. The sisters of the convent felt it was a spiritual thing since they had prayed to be able to afford to have stairs made. A reference was made to the man being just like Jesus, a carpenter. Can anyone give me more info on this. thanx

Someone came forward years later and claimed that their father (or grandfather?) was the carpenter. A copy of the blueprint was even produced, but some thought it was a forgery.
That is all I know. |

Never saw this episode, but I do know the story. I believe this to have occured at a church in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I actually got to see the staircase about 10 years ago, and its unconventional design is something to marvel at.

The staircase is at the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe. If you look up 'Loretto Chapel staircase' or something like it in Google, you'll find many links with lots of information. Here are three that I found interesting:

yes, that was the case of the mysterious staircase in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I belive the stairs had exactly 33 steps, the same age as Jesus Christ when he was placed on the cross, and they never found out the mysterious strangers identity.

Yep. if you go to the Unsolved Mysteries official website and click on the link that takes you to the Most Popular Stories, there is someone you can contact to get more information about the staircase. This is what they have on their webpage:
For information on the Miracle Staircase, please write to: Loretto Chapel 211 Old Santa Fe Trail Santa Fe, NM 87501 Hope that helps.

Oh brother. It must be great to be a conspiracy or a religious-oriented legend. You don't even have to exist and everyone thrills to behold you, like that jingle bells tune, enhancement all the way...
Man, what I wouldn't give to have an ongoing video/audio tape of that church in that period, supposedly 1877 to 1881. Some guy spending 6+ months making a staircase while otherwise staggering around in the Santa Fe desert. Spitting. Getting drunk. Dodging tumble weeds and prairie dogs. Completely unaware that he would turn into Jesus the carpenter decades after his unremarkable life. Can I PLEASE just be allowed to bet on some of this stuff? So much easier than trying to decipher these football or basketball games. |
