My boyfriend is offended with the way Mark's personality changed on the show. He said that Mark was a tough guy who knew what he wanted. Later in the seasons, Mark became somewhat of a wuss. He also became "dumb." Sorta "dumb blonde" dumb. (Please, no offense to blondes, I was blonde for over 15 years. Suicide Blonde) Anyhow, just curious how you all feel about this change in the character.

I hated how the men were being portrayed overall. You could really sense Roseanne's disdain for men in later seasons.

I think we started seeing drastic changes in the male characters after Roseanne divorced Tom Arnold. I think she took her agression out on the scripts.

I was actually glad men were portrayed the way they were on Roseanne. For years, females had been stereotypically written to conform to some unwritten law. Roseanne always had problems with that and kind of flipped the script on such a notion.
I actually think the show got funnier it it went of. Seasons 5 and 6 are my absolute favourites. |

I think that even though Mark was "tough" he was also kinda dumb from the get-go. It's too bad he self-destructed in RL.

I agree with the way men were portrayed, but it's becoming like that everywhere now. A guy on TV is too stupid to change a flat tire nowadays apparently without his wife coming to the rescue with fix-a-flat. Also men are apparently too stupid and whipped to know that his cereal will stay crunchy in milk w/o being told by his wife. I'm all for women's rights but it seems like it's becoming a reverse of what it was in the past. Women having all the power, smarts, and control on tv and guys being stupid, whipped, and wussy.

But you're right, he was kind of dumb even at day 1. Remember his first day Darlene asked 'what's 2 plus 2' and he said "HUH?" |
