well, that is a matter of opinion, but it is definately her funniest role she's had on TV - but if you are unfamiliar with the show, it would be hard to say if you'd like it or not. Keep in mind that this show has an ensemble cast, so in some episodes Jessica Tate may only have a few scenes, but she DOES have a number of central storylines, so its not like she is a secondary character or anything.

Though my personal favorite actors are the late, great, and missed Cathryn Damon and Richard Mulligan, in my opinion Katherine Helmond WAS the show. Soap had an ensemble cast (and what an awesome cast) and there were many storylines, but Katherine's Jessica Tate was probably the most central character. I love Katherine in this show. She's brilliant. I couldn't stand Who's the Boss, but I watched it just for her. She was fabulous in that too. But Katherine's best role in my opinion was Jessica Tate on Soap. Jessica and Mona are two completely different characters, which shows Katherine's versatility. Remember, Soap is a satire of soap operas. It's funny, witty, crude at times, and also very warm hearted. I would say buy the DVD! But that's just me! hope this helps.

You could always rent one of the discs to see if you like it. I think she's a zillion times funnier on SOAP than Who's The Boss. But, it's a different type of humour as burtnmary said.

I would but the DVD, but may hold off for the time being because I just bought the entire series on VHS through E Bay. If I, in turn sell them, then I will either buy the discs or transfer mine to DVD.

After watching all the seasons (including season four) all together, I have to agree that if any character was the star of the show, it was the Jessica character. She really seemed to be the one who was focused on most. She was involved in some of the major cliffhangers

Spoiler: (Highlight this box to see the hidden message.)
1.Who killed Peter Campbell? - major
2.Choosing Chester or Donohue - that one was kind of minor
3.In a coma at the hospital - major
4.Malaguay firing squad - major

Plus she had quite a few dramatic moments that made her character stand out a bit more from the others. I loved Jessica's dramatic moments as much as the comedic ones.
