looks like the next trend in TV-DVD's is complete series box sets for shows.
In the past, we've seen "complete packages" of shows like X-Files, various Trek shows and the sort that was just a repackaging of the sets, but this fall, they're doing special complete packages for shows like Buffy, Sex And The City and Friends that have new deluxe packaging, and Buffy and Sex even have bonus discs that weren't in the original sets. Considering the S&TC set will be $299.99, there's no way in hell I'm getting it, not even if it's on sale for $239.99 or whatever. There's no way I'd be benefitting from selling my old copies off because you can go to Target and buy all the sets for $29.99 a piece and it'd still be cheaper than the deluxe set. However, the Buffy set retails for $199.99 and Amazon has it for $139.99 and I have a $15 gift certificate from them, and I am sure I can make $80-100 off selling my existing sets so the difference would be little enough that I won't feel guilty splurging an extra $30 for the bonus disc, book and new packaging (I heard Fox is going to replace the annoying foldout digipacks with thinpacks, which are much more shelf-saving. What do people think of this? When this happens to your favorite show, will you sell off your existing sets for this new deluxe version or go "screw it, I have this show"? |

If it's something I've started, and I find out later that there's an entire collection that's either cheaper than what I paid for the individual releases combined, or if there's new bonus stuff, I'd be pissed.
There's going to be a collection of all 3 Degrassi Jr. High seasons coming out around a month after the individual third season set is released. The price for the entire set will be less than what I already paid for season 1 and season 2 together. That's not even including what I'll have to pay for season 3 by itself. So in that respect I don't like it, but if it's something I don't have, like the Dick Van Dyke Show or Friends, it's something I would take advantage of. It's interesting, I almost didn't get the individual Pee Wee's Playhouse volumes last year because they announced there would be one big collection with extra material coming out this year. If I decided to wait I'd still be waiting for it. |

I think Cheers and Frasier are the only shows I would consider buying a deluxe set of if I already have every season. And maybe Seinfeld, but you can't get any more deluxe that what they've started with.
Actually, I'm such a big Cheers/Frasier geek that I think I would keep the regular sets AND buy the deluxe set. I wouldn't buy a deluxe set just for new packaging. However, any sort of extra disc and it's mine. |

And if they did the same with Hunter, you had better believe that one would SO be in my collection. I cannot possibly express the amount of love I have for Hunter.

If I already had any of the seasons I would consider buying the sets. It seems like alot of money to use at once. When you buy them individually you don't realize how much money adds up.

depends on what it is... i preordered the Degrassi Jr. High set awhile ago because i knew it was coming - everything else I'll have to wait and see, I dont plan on selling anything.

So you hadn't gotten the individual seasons of Degrassi yet? Lucky dog. When I saw the reasonable price on amazon for the three season collection, I wasn't happy. I'll especially be upset if they improve the packaging. So far each disc is in a regular movie-sized case, not a slimcase. So with 6 discs so far, seasons 1 and 2 are already taking up a good amount of space on the shelf. I can just see them realeasing the three volume collection in a nice, slim package. |

I honestly am having a hard time thinking of any other series that I am into that they could conceivably release as a box set.... |

Even though I already have all the "Friends" sets, I'm pumped about getting the box set. I figure I'll just give my previous copies to my friend, who I've recently converted to the show.

I am all for complete series boxed-sets, if I haven't bought the series yet. I wouldn't sell off my exsisting sets though. For Sex And The City I am thinking of blind buying the series, but wont get the Deluxe Set because it is more expensive. I am holding out on buying Angel and Frasier because I would rather buy them in a boxed set.

I wouldn't rebuy DVDs that I already own. I like extras and slimmer packaging but I rather use the money towards something else. The uncut show is the most important thing to me. If I don't already have the DVDs I would totally buy the complete series at once. I want to get the I Love Lucy Set.
