Dukes of Hazzard boycott? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

We live in such a PC world today, I am surprised that no one from the N.A.A.C.P. is organising a boycott of the Dukes of Hazzards movie because of the Confiderate flag on the car.

I am not african american, but I could see african americans being offended by it. Personally, I don't think that flag represents racism. It is just a flag of a short lived country. The buring crosses by the K.K.K. is another story. Still I could see african americans being offended.

What a coincidence, we were talking about this in my history class.

I think it represents more than just a short-lived country. It represents a rebellious nation that didn't want to stay with the Union. I can see how it represents racism on some level.

That's one reason I'm boycotting it. The other reason I'm doing it is because they shouldn't do remakes of classic shows such as "The Dukes of Hazzard" and casting actors and actresses that aren't very good.

A boycott of the movie over the Confederate flag is ridiculous. Most people down south do not use the flag as a symbol of racism. I'm sure that when most people see the Confederate flag in the movie, given the movie's context, they don't think "racism". It's just a symbol of Southern identity. Some people may use it as a racist symbol, just in the same way some use the Christian cross as a racist or anti-semitic symbol.

The Confederate flag was actually based on St. Andrew's cross, a Christian symbol. Ever notice how it resembles the Union Jack?

well, it shows just how much more sensitive the nation has gotten in 25 years. In the early 80's, we all had Dukes Of Hazzard toys, us as little kids thought nothing about the flag on top of their car, it was just some design, and yet now it's that the Dukes are Klansmen.

the Dukes are country boys, nothing more, nothing less. I have never seen anything on the show that would make you think they are racist, if anything, they were the "good guys" while Boss Hogg was the one who was a bad guy.

When I see someone with a Confederate Flag on their car (I like in northern KY, where there's some, and some who aren't), first thing I think is "these guys are white trash", but remember that Bo and Luke Duke were supposed to be rebels (in a good way) and the confederates were rebellious (though not in a good way). If the show was set in NYC and they still had the Confederate Flag on their car, it'd be a completely different story.

the swastica was the buddhist symbol so does that mean its ok to put it on cars?

The swastika, in its original form with points facing counterclockwise, was a symbol of good luck in ancient India. The one that Hitler used was an inverted one, meaning anarchy, the elements of nature thrown out of harmony. It's almost like using an upside down cross, a perversion of its original meaning.

Did you also know that the peace sign was originally an anti-Christian symbol?

alright i admit you got me there but hey im not saying that nobody should see the movie-it is my personal choice not to see it b/c of that. besides im also not going to see it b/c it looks horribly unfunny

Actually, someone from the NAACP is calling for a boycott of the Dukes of Hazzard movie. I saw it on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

All symbols of middle America are under attack, by the way. The cross is seen by some as a symbol of slavery because Christianity was forced on blacks during slavery, which is why so many black Americans have adopted Islam. One such Muslim, basketball player Chris Jackson, became Muhammed Abdul-Raouf and regarded the flag as a symbol of racism and oppression. The Confederate flag? No - the Stars and Stripes! When he played for the Denver Nuggets, Abdul-Raouf refused to stand for the national anthem and honor the flag.

As for me, I'm boycotting the Dukes of Hazzard movie not just because I hate Confederate flags unless they are flown by Lynyrd Skynyrd fans, but also for the following reasons:

Jessica Simpson is in it.

There's a scene in which Bo and Luke ride through Atlanta in blackface.

Jessica Simpson is in it.

Burt Reynolds makes a terrible Boss Hogg.

Jessica Simpson is in it.

This movie is aimed at the submoronic, lunkheaded teenage white boys who will one day run the country.

Jessica Simpson is in it.

Even Ben Jones, the original Cooter from the TV series, hated it.

Jessica Simpson is in it.

Did I happen to mention that Jessica Simpson is in it?

That flag must sure have something "bad" attached to it. When my husband and I were in Florida, we did some shopping in the "off tourist" area in a western store.

He loves those shirts like Garth Brooks wears - bold, bright, etc.. One of the shirts he grabbed had the Confederate design on it. We both just liked it because it looked "Americanish" (if that's a term

) and looked good on him.

Well we got tons of stares at the airport in Orlando and just chalked it up to him looking pretty good in it.

It wasn't until we got on an elevator with a couple of black guys back in Canada and they just GLARED at us and started whispering. That's when I did a couple of googles and found out what it could represent! We just about died.

He said he still wanted to wear it because it was just a nice looking shirt to him, but I begged him not to - it's o.k. though - I fattened him up enough that within about 6 months he COULDN'T wear it anymore!

Good ol' boy movies make you root for the sheriff or political boss that's trying to stop the good ol' boys, because if they stop the good ol' boys, there won't be any movie!

I agree with you there! I find myself even getting a bit paranoid (like in my story). I don't want to offend anyone, and am not the least bit racist - just like the design of certain things.

I've even been criticized by an aborginal (Canada's equivalent to Native Americans) for wearing some jewelry and Indian style jackets though - I LOVE that stuff and even their culture - what's wrong with it? ('course this person was also a kook who grew up with Shania Twain and called her a "skank" - meanwhile, you should see THIS broad!

I thought Jessica Simpson's presence is a draw for men actually. Or are you not attracted to female artists you don't like musically? Like a lot of guys might hate Jessica or Britney's music but still would wanna boink them, same with Madonna back in the 1980's. So because you don't like Jessica's music, her washing the General Lee in a bikini isn't enticing to you? lol.
