Songs That Were Banned on the Radio - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I know that songs that never played on the radio such as "Jungle Fever" by the Chakachas. That was banned from the airwaves because the song was inappropriate. There are some other songs that were banned on the radio. For example, Don would also like to note that Chuck Berry's "My Ding-a-Ling" dropped from the number one position at the other New York City Top 40 stations this week; WNBC, WNBC-FM, WXLO, WPIX; and WWDJ (Hackensack, NJ), where it spent five straight weeks as number one. This, "Cover of the Rolling Stone," along with "The Ballad of John and Yoko" and the spoken word recording "Americans" are the only other monster hits I'm aware of where WABC simply ignored the record, and its chart performance in the market. One urban folk tale is that the wife of WABC's General Manager heard "My Ding-a-Ling" and "ordered" her husband to take the record off the air, after it was played for two days as a Hot Prospect. ("Cover of the Rolling Stone" was allegedly banned because of the reference to cocaine in the lyrics, "The Ballad of John and Yoko" for profanity.). These are the songs that were banned from the radio. Any thoughts?

"The Ballad of John and Yoko" by the Beatles - banned by many U.S. radio stations for the lyric "Christ! You know it ain't easy, and some detected an unsavory pun in the lyric "We're only tryin' to get us some peace." It only got to number eight in the U.S. because of that.

I remember Rod Stewart's "Tonight's The Night" was banned from the Toronto area airwaves - not sure if it was nation-wide when it first came out.

"Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was banned by the BBC in 1984 for not-so-suggestive homoerotic lyrics.

A lot of songs were temporarily banned from the radio because of 9/11, such as John Lennon's "Imagine" and Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

Apparently, Loretta Lynn had 14 songs banned during her career. I know "The Pill" was definitely one of them, and "Rated X" was possibly another, but I'm not sure about the rest.

Many radio stations also refused to play Martina McBride's "Independence Day" when it was first released, due to the controversial issue of domestic violence, and because of that, I believe it only charted at #12. Ironically, she probably wouldn't be where she is today without that song.

Hmmm none of those classic songs seem even slightly suggestive compared to todays potty-mouthed garbage... apparently, they stopped censoring musicradio just when they should have started !

"Wake Up Little Susie" by The Everly Brothers was really controversial back in the 50's!

It is about a couple who fell asleep at the drive-in movie and didn't wake up until the next morning. The lines that were objected to was;

"What are we going to tell your Mama
What are we gonna tell your Pa

What are we gonna tell our friends when they say"OOOOOhhhhh- La La."

Nasty stuff!

"What A Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong was banned as well.

Sadly, I remember someone called into a radio station and requested the song "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor" on 9/11. The radio host called him a sick ****.

Yeah, its one of the few Canadian contributions to culture that makes me cringe

Randy Newman's "Short People" was banned because people took it literally and thought Newman was making fun of folks who weren't quite so tall. What's Newman got aginst short people, anyway, doesn't he realize it's stupid to hate people on the basis of their height? everyone said. It's also stupid to hate people on the basis of their race, religion, or ethnicity. That was the point of the song - that all bigotry is stupid! No one got it.

In Maryland, it's still illegal to play "Short People" on the radio. I'm not making that up!
