Maybe it is old age creeping in, but wasn't there an episode where the girls tied themselves to a tree to keep it from getting sawed down?

Yea. I believe it was Vera who tied herself to a tree. She was a dingy.

Yeah, I'm thinking the girls were chained to a tree...if I recall correctly portions of that were used for the opening sequences in the Ladd seasons

Believe it or not, Edith had more sense than all of them. She did stand up to Archie once in a while. Vera was more goofy than anything, Chrissy hands down was the dumbest.
