Why would Florida say things in front of Michael

Michael is already apprehensive abt having to use the bus to go to another school and then there is Florida saying to James in front of Michael abt how she has had nightmares abt the school bus being turned over with all those little kids on it. Why on earth would you say this in front of your child??? First it was James saying male chauvinistic remarks in front of all the kids now it was Florida's turn. Man, I know that apt. is small but give me a break.

I'm wondering was a school bus full of children really turned over around the time that episode aired? I was trying to do research on it.

It must've been the WHITE writers who wanted that bus to really overturn. So they wrote it in the script.

Buses were being overturned in various cities in 1970. I'm not sure exactly how many years it continued.

Whether the writers wanted it to happen or not, it was happening in the 70's

I figured that's why it was in the script. I was just curious to know when it actually happened since I'm always interested in history

It could have been. She may not have necessarily been referring to an incident in Chicago since active protests were still going on everywhere.

I recall seeing abt that on the history channel. It is so appalling and, God, I can't even begin to find the words to describe these violent acts. You know when Good Times first aired on CBS, this was the first time I had ever been made aware of school buses being turned over with children in them. I was 10 years old. I was so shocked. So if anything, Good Times was an educational tool for some of us.

In Florida's defense, she wasn't saying anything Michael didn't already know. Michael already knew that he wasn't going to be readily accepted at the predominately white school. Black children were made aware of exactly what was going on because they were facing it too. Plus, Michael followed everything in the news, on the news, and in books that had and was occuring.

That's why children marched along with adults during the civil rights movement. The children would be subject to attacks when their parents weren't present so they had to know exactly what was happening no matter how bad.

As far as James, we know that in most episodes, more than not, he and Florida would make the children leave the room. It was a human/parent error moment that all parents have.

God, with some of the stunts pulled by whites in the past, it still makes me ashamed sometimes of being white. I know there's good and bad in every race, but geez - you'd think in the 20th century we would have been more enlightened. I've just never understood how anyone wants to live their lives in hatred.

Gotcha Zion, thanx for enlightening me on that. You are so right, I just seen Michael as a child in that episode when in fact he is beyond his years. He is very well aware, you are right. I guess the mother instinct in me just kicked in.
