James was about to take that job in Alaska and all she did was whine like a baby. "James, your family needs you here!" (sob) That was $500 dollars a week for the family. Yeah, he was going far away, but he was doing it for them, and Florida accused him for doing it for himself. She did pack up and went to Arizona with Carl, right? Then, she refused to do the vitabrite commercial making $5000. She was so worried about her "lying repuation" It wasn't lying, it was acting. Furthermore, J.J. won that $2500 on the lotto, and she told him he should put it in the bank. It wasn't her money to tell him to do that. Man, I loved Florida, but sometimes, she had some issues that needed to be ironed out. She was selfish.

anyhow, yeah, I have a spouse that had a job that required him to leave out of town for two weeks at a time and three months at a time, it was hard and I missed him, but for the overall good of our family I accepted it. James was someone you could trust. He wouldn't hurt Florida. I trusted my man. Now, if she was dealing with a man who was irresponsible, I could see Florida's point, but she was wrong here!!!! James would have had my total support!! |

I really don't see Florida as being selfish. She wanted her family close by. She wanted a father for her children. Especially in a dangerous ghetto, she wanted her man to be around. Florida had faith in Jesus that somehow they would get by, and they always did.

All women are selfish or if you want a softer reference "spoiled" to a certain degree, in their own way about different things. As far as the commercial, she was just as honest with herself as she was with James and the money she convinced him to turn in. Edith did the same thing when she had the detergent commercial. As far as JJ, as a mother she was doing the right thing to advise him to put it in the bank. She was teaching him responsibility. It may have been his money, but he was still living in her house, and she is his mother. The sitcom was about family, togetherness, honesty, morals.
If I'm not mistaken, and I agree with Florida, the children were still in school. Teenagers or not, they needed their father there. When Florida left, they were basically adults. It has nothing to do with trust, it had nothing to do with Florida being selfish it had everything to do with the family structure. Even today, I'm all for it. If the husband moves, we all move together at the same time. Otherwise, we stay put. |

Oh yeah, and to be realistic, in this case James turned down the job and that was the end of that. But in the real world it would have been good to show in later episodes when the money got tight again or James was having employment struggles, it would have been good to show James saying (out of anger folks, don't get mad): "You see Florida, if I had just taken that Alaska job we wouldn't be in this mess". Or something to that effect. Imagine those words being said in some episode a couple months after the Alaska job episode. Doesn't that make sense at least? A man who has worked and struggled as hard as James has, would feel that way. The writers already had him saying male chauvinistic things today when Florida was flipping out, so why not have him say things out of anger regarding not having gone to Alaska?

Willona was a typical single woman. She really didn't have any business commenting, neither Florida getting sucked in and listening, but in real life it happens. I remember when one of my sisters friends got married and we were all on vacation shortly thereafter and my sister was still single. One evening the friend thought she was about to hang out with my sister. My mother said oh no honey, your married now, you will be hanging out with me. As far as James and his statement, I watched that episode today, it may have been what some consider chauvanistic, but back in the day that is what some men thought. Hell, if I had a husband like James, with money of course, who was content with me staying home and taking care of him and the kids, no problem. What Florida had not realized is that in doing just that, you can still have purpose and be somebody. Hell, my mother did it and she has no complaints, and she has so much confidence in who she is, sometimes I think too much ![]() Plus, I think Florida was a little hormonal. Something had to set her off, she never had a problem with being a stay at home mother before. I know when I'm hormonal, I can't even stand myself, so I just don't go around anyone until I get myself in check.

Anyhoo in regards to the men, we may be hormonal, but the catch attitudes for no reason at all too. They chalk it up to getting up on the wrong side of the bed. It's funny cause I tell my mother that my dog Zion is just like a typical man, one minute I can say come give mommy a kiss, or come and let mommy rub your belly or ears and he will look at me and turn his head and walk away. And when I'm busy or tired, here he comes rolling on his back spread eagle wanting me to rub his belly or wanting to give me a kiss. When they (men) want what they want, they want it. When they don't want to be bothered, they don't want to be bothered. They (men) catch attitude too.let's see how many men catch this.

You know Zion you hit it on the head. I swear, we are like a toy football to men sometimes. When they want to play with us, they pick us up and play. Then when they don't want to play no more, they throw us back down, not even in the damn toybox!!!! Yeah, as far as men saying" Oh yeah, it's that time of the month, or getting off the wrong side of the bed. HELLO D**KHEAD, why can't I have a valid reason for feeling the way I feel??? Men do, why can't women??? Can't I have a migraine? Can't I feel tired from having not slept the night before? Can't I be on edge knowing the house is a mess, the kids need to be tended to, there are errands and appts., etc. and I have cramps that hurt like hell and there is nothing to relieve them. When a man gets sick (boo hoo) oh my God, spread the seas because he is so sick, he wants to die...and all he has is a cold!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't have minded if they did send James to Alaska as a storyline to explain John Amos' disappearance. Then hopefully, Norman Lear would come to his senses and hire John back.
