how come the flintstones is still copyrighted then if it aired in the 60s?

wouldn't that make it 40 years old

Rights can be renewed. Copyright law was revised in the '70s to extend rights to 50 years for published work - I don't remember if that affects filmed work or not. No doubt Hanna Barbera renewed the copyright on the Flintsones when it came up - stuff drops into public domain when the copyright owner doesn't exercise their rights and allows the copyright to lapse.

i dont have a clue

but i know there are about 30 eps of the beverly hillbillies that are public domain

the local shopko has a cheaply made 5 disc set for like $5.99

with about 30 eps, and it says they are public domain, i searched and found it to be true

funny thing is they are from many different years

so some are and most are not

Smile Lucy Show also

Same thing seems to be true for the LUCY SHOW, check out the bargain bins and dollar stores, and u seem the same collection of Lucy Show episodes over and over and over, it seems that a handful are public domain now but most of the series is not, i wonder why?

do you have to renew copyrights on each episode? or the whole show? maybe some fell through the cracks or got overlooked in the paperwork, who knows?

hi, you can go to the copyright office website and read all about copyright. copyright was revamped and most works are copyrighted for 75 years if my memory serves me correctly. works use to be copyrighted for the authors life + 50 years, but that has changed. copyright also had to be renewed, but that is no longer the case. the reason certain shows, like the beverly hillbillies are in the public domain, is because when it came time for them to be renewed, the copyright was not renewed due to oversight or just not thinking that the show no longer had value. once it was realized that shows had syndication value, then most copyrights were renewed when they were suppose to be. for the best answer, i would visit the copyright office website as mentioned earlier or visit your local library. thanks
