It was never portrayed on tv, but there was an episode from the Jeffersons that showed George going back to his old neighborhood and the actual apartment he grew up in. Wee Zee found out that George was giving money to a family and if I'm not mistaken, I haven't seen that episode in a while, I think she thought George had an illigitemate child. She later found out that George, out of the kindness of his heart, and the memories of his poor childhood, was giving this family money and gifts, like a secret santa. The family didn't even know that it was George doing all of this for them.
It was a very humbling episode. You really got to see that George did not forget from whence he had come.
