Mr Hendrix was dischraged from 101STAirbase In 1962.Launching his music career that would refine the guitar as it is with his rock and roll vers of The Star Spagled Banner. Charles R Cross'Room Full Of Mirrors" He might been sent to Vietnam if he did not say thta he was gay.He played The Star Spanngled Banner in 1968.Also he had been arrested for stealing cars in Seattle his home town, and he is buried in his home town also. Still Miss him

Could he said that he was gay,so that we got to listen to some more great tunes from him,I know if he did join the Army he may not be here. But, he lived to be I love those long guitar sweet sounds Rest Easy Jimi.

I saw a documentary a while back on his life and I don't think that was never mentioned. His being gay that is. I know his love for woman and many women he had was mentioned all throughout.

I wish I could remember who broadcast the documentary on his life.

Apparently what you have heard has recently come out in a new biography.

He wasn't gay but he lied in order to get the discharge.

It's recorded that he took the car without permission on possibly two different occasions.

I think it would have been recorded as theft otherwise, so he must have taken the car of someone he knew without permission.

Publicly, Hendrix always claimed he was discharged after breaking his ankle on a parachute jump, though records don't mention such an injury. But in regular visits to the base psychiatrist at Ft. Campbell, Ky., in spring 1962, Hendrix said he was in love with one of his squad mates and had become addicted to masturbating, Cross writes. Finally, Capt. John Halbert recommended Hendrix for discharge, citing his "homosexual tendencies."

Hendrix's legendary appetite for women negates the notion he might have been gay, Cross writes. Nor was he politically motivated: Contrary to his later image, Hendrix was an avowed anti-communist who exhibited little unease about the U.S. role in Vietnam. He just wanted to escape the Army to play music, Cross writes.

Jimi Hendrix was NOT gay - not even close!!!

And where do you get that he played the Star Spangled Banner in 1986???? Must be one helluva sound system in heaven if anybody here heard it since he died in 1970.

My God - first Elvis spotted at 7-Elevens and what next - Jimi spotted at Gay clubs playing the National Anthem??

Yes - lets let Jimi truly rest in peace and not promote silly rumours or after-death stories!

Will do! I take it you're also a huge Hendrix fan? I was hooked at age 8 (influenced by my eldest brother) from his very first album!
I did see that movie about him, but didn't like the ending - it seemed something was "cleaned up" about the circumstances. I've read biographies and have heard stories from the beginning and from what I heard he could have been saved - there were German girls partying with him that night and all they had to do was turn him on his side and phoned paramedics but they were too concerned they'd be busted.
It did bother me to hear that he was violent against women because of how he felt about his own mother, but I'll still love him until I'm six feet under.

Zion's Mom - thanks for that link - that sure sounds like something Jimi would do!! Smart as a fox! I also loved his response to Dick Cavett when Dick said that there was contraversy about his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and he came back with "It's beautiful man!"

I remember wishing I were older so I could travel to England to try to hunt him down. He had to have the coolest look of anybody back then.

And I want what I have on my sig engraved on my headstone when I'm gone.

Yes I'm a fan. The funny thing is my nephew who is the music major in college has such a funky style that he reminds me of Hendrix. One of my nephews professor says he's like a pit bull when it comes to learning more and more about music. He attacks, grabs hold and locks in, he won't let go.

My nephew is better looking than Hendrix, but he carries his guitar every where he goes. I have to ask him if he listens to Hendrix. I would assume he does. My sister, his mom, introduced all of her kids to music from the 50's - 70's. She tells them that was really music when everyone played multiple instruments and sang with their true voices not studio enhancements.

Then again, my nephew may be a fan of Larry Graham, the pioneer of slap-pop on the electric guitar. Larry Graham is soooooooooo fine

No - you didn't upset me - I just wanted to set the record straight because I have followed him and his career, etc. for most of my life - don't think I was mad at you at all - we all welcome everyone's input. (Maybe I overdid it with the "!" marks, but I always do).

What the article said though was that he "played" like he was gay to get out of the army (Hendrix hated Vietnam and the war, but that's a whole other topic for another thread). And it must have been a typo on the date in your original post then - again, just wanted to straighten it out.

No, I don't think he was gay, considering what so many young people were up against in facing the possibility of going to Vietnam, a lot of them would have done whatever it took to getting out of the army.

But, the air force loses a soldier, the music world gains a guitar god.

Wow - you're nephew is better looking than Hendrix? I always thought Jimi was absolutely gorgeous - with such a "cool" aura about him (especially in his Spanish hats). Your sister had to have introduced him to Hendrix at some point - failing that, he might have been from some of his friends. I'm (happily) surprised at just how many "kids" today are enjoying the music we grew up with.
Wow - I feel so ignorant - I've never heard of Larry Graham. I'll have to check him out - I'm sure I could find information if I googled his name.
