Hey remember that interview Damon gave where he said that he had a feeling that ABC was going to cancel MWAK anyway? Well I would'nt be surprised that Damon and the crew just went ahead and said "The Hell With It!" and just put anything on the air.
Plus they were going head to head w/ American Idol which hurt the show anyway. Just a thought. |

What I'd still like to know is what possessed them to make Franklin a series regular? If they had learned anything about sitcoms, they would know that the new characters are almost always responsible for the decline of any show. It happened to The Brady Bunch, it happened to The Cosby Show, and it almost happened to Married with Children.
I still consider Franklin to be indirectly responsible for the show's demise as a whole. My theory is that once the writers started casting Franklin as an overly-intelligent child, that only encouraged them to start making unrealistic concepts, which only got sillier as they went along with it. After Franklin, Junior and Vanessa suddenly forsook college as they had to take care of their arriving baby. We got crazier stories, like the one where they try to exterminate a mouse, and many where Michael and Jay kept getting on each others' nerves. And there was also Vanessa's parents, mostly her dad. All of these made the recurring characters too much of a distraction, and probably turned away so many viewers who only wanted to watch a TV show about a family sticking together thru the thick and thin. All of this could be the key as to why they canned My Wife and Kids, but kept George Lopez, because Lopez was also getting it's butt kicked by American Idol. George Lopez survived, probably because it has been relatively more consistent since the beginning. Regardless of whether or not it was up against American Idol (moving it to Tuesdays certainly didn't help), My Wife and Kids would've still had a fighting chance if it at least stuck to its original premise. If A) Junior and Vanessa stayed in school and DIDN'T have sex, if B) they didn't turn Jay into a chicken wife, and if C) they didn't let the side characters steal the spotlight (keep in mind there WAS a time Franklin volunteered to be the Kyles' new "son" :-/), the show would've been okay. |
