Elton John and music rights? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I wonder if music rights from Elton John might be holding this show up?

Since season 1 is only 15 episodes maybe Sony was going to release two seasons at the same time like That's My Mama. I think season 2 has the Elton John impersonation episode. Hmm...makes one wonder? I would love it if the first two seasons were released together!

I don't think so because it wasn't his actual song that was being used.

"Don't Go Breaking My Heart" wasn't originally an Elton John song, or did they use something similar?

one of the girls had the LP Picture of Elton up on her wall in her room that was from the 1974 album Caribou

old post, but just saw it. I think Brian meant that the girls did a re-recording of the track, instead of the Elton John version. Rerecordings of songs are never as expensive as the original published recorded version. It's like how you'll hear Beatles covers on tv shows all the time (two that come to immediate mind were "In My Life" as the theme to Providence and the usage of "Blackbird" at the end of the season 9 episode where Darlene gave birth, when the baby starts getting better, and there likely won't be issues with those on DVD (Providence is out on DVD in a best of set and I never heard anything about replacing the theme), but actually using the original Beatles rights would probably really be expensive as hell to pay for the usage on DVD.

As a somewhat interesting sidenote, the recently released "Captain & Tennille" boxset from Respond 2 has a performance of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Toni Tennille and John Travolta (not a joke), as I was watching I figured since rights were given for this cover version than Valerie B & Mack shouldn't be a problem......the "Good Ship Lollipop" though could be a problem.....more likely Sony just can't get their act together and that's why this release has been delayed for over a year now!

I was shocked to watch the DVD and hear the actual Elton John song "Rocket Man". I also heard "The Hustle" and "Pick Up The Pieces" (I also heard the latter on the Season 2 DVD of Good Times). Pleasantly shocked, that is.
