Default Question?

If you watch the ABP series, you notice Bill Quinn's role as Mr. Edgar Van R. is not on nearly as much. Did Bill Quinn have health problems in real life, especially in its 4th season, or the fact they had enough characters that his appearance wasn't needed as much. If someone could tell me, I'd greatly appreciate it. You also notice with the addition of Denise Miller that Danielle Brisebois's appearance were lessened.

I really don't know about Mr. Van R's lessened appearances, but I would guess that he wasn't a central character to the series and probably was used only when needed. So, you're probably right on that one.

I think after the Murray character (played by Martin Balsam) left, the show went downhill. Archie needs a strong foil to work against and they just kept adding young characters like Billie in a desperate attempt to have Archie deal with the issues of young girls, which he was ill-equipped to deal with.

One of the good things about this show was that it least it changed its name from All In The Family. Some shows continue on without key characters and while they keep the show's name, it's not the same show really. At least they changed the name and shifted the focus to the bar.

It wasn't the same Archie from AITF - he'd softened over the years - and it was a more traditional kind of sitcom, so the name change was appropriate.

Personally, when Mike and Gloria left All In The Family to move to California, they should've ended it then and there.

Archie Bunkers Place was Not as excellent as AITF.

It was still a great show & had many memorable episodes.

I`m glad to have AITF & ABP on DVD.

I wish ABP would be released unedited on DVD commercially like AITF but I don`t think it will happen.

All In The Family was a great show, a classic. A show that's still remembered fondly to this day.

Archie Bunker's Place was a good show. Period.

If ABP didn't have the AITF to compare to, it would come off better. When I watched Archie's show a couple of years ago, it didn't hold up quite as well as I would have thought.

In my opinion, ABP is the best show of all time. In my opinion, Archie, Murray, Veronica and Steph were better than Archie, Edith, Mike and Gloria. The AITF ones without Archie showed how much the other 3 needed him. The first 2 years of ABP were a little better than the last 2. O' Connor in his autobiography "I Think I'm outta Here" talked about what a great actor Martin Balsam was and I think be blows Reiner away as an actor. I liked how Murray and Rabinowitz could put Archie down subtlely while Mike spent half the time ranting and raving. Even Gloria could overdo it with her crying. When they complete AITF on DVD they will and should put ABP on DVD. O' Connor really was a genius in writing scripts. In that book, he says he came up for the rough draft of "Archie Alone" and came up with the idea of Gloria having her own show. He also said he wrote one of the rough drafts on AITF's pilot. Anybody who knew him said he was one of the bests at taking a script and making it better. Norman Lear said he considered O' Connor as Bunker as the best acting ever and he's right. It would have been nice to have seen Bunker interact with characters as Fred Sanford and Al Bundy. Also years ago when they got the Jefferson's and Seinfeld's parents on thos Denny's commercials, it would have been sweet to see Stapleton and O' Connor in one of those,.

I find the differences between AITF and ABP to be among many examples of how art imitates life. Both these shows are from different eras.AITF 70s era,ABP 80s era.A lot had changed in Archie's life in ABP.Just as the 1980s were a big change from the 70s.Things change all the time. It's an ever changing world we live in.
