music rights strikes again!!! - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

this time Paramount's inability to fork over music rights not only screws over Happy Days season 2, but also future Laverne And Shirley and Mork And Mindy DVD's (because Paramount has obviously never looked at Sony's handling of the Norman Lear titles, where Good Times has more DVD's out than All In The Family, while Maude has zero out, even tho GT is the spinoff of a spinoff of AITF)

I read this on Home Theater Forum from a poster who has Paramount connections

What's wrong with who?

Paramount? If someone is asking them for more money than would be profitable for them in order to include music on the dvd, why blame Paramount?

The music rights holders? They're looking to make money, that's part of the business.

well, the part I don't get is why Paramount can't just carry on with L&S and M&M just because Happy Days is too expensive to carry on. I actually like Mork And Mindy more than Happy Days personally and while I'd love to see a HD season 2 and would buy it, I'd want M&M season 2 even more.

I've read in alot of places, and I think you said this at the Charmed board too, that the reason season 2 of Charmed was delayed for 8 months was because of Paramount having a problem with music rights or something.

now with seasons 2 and 3 of Charmed I'm curious to see what happens with the P3 performances, I know The Cranberries performed a song in season 2 and Barenaked Ladies were in season 3, and there's an episode in season 5 that not only had Pat Benatar performing, but also had her acting in it and the fact she was going to perform at P3 as part of the plot.

I know other WB shows from the era like Dawson (where EVERYTHING was replaced), Roswell (but some "key" songs by the likes of Sheryl Crow, Dave Matthews and a few others, and retains the Dido theme song) and Popular (where most music was replaced but somehow Buena Vista retained usage of several Madonna tracks used over the two seasons) had to deal with a lot of missing music (or in Dawson's case, all missing music) on DVD because many of the WB shows use current music in the background and the sort that five years later really isn't as needed a lot of the time as it was just in the background to sell albums. Buffy had a few major copyrighted songs but they all made it to the DVD's (Cher's Believe in season 4, Sarah McLachlan in season 2 and season 6, Michelle Branch in season 6, Cibo Matto in season 2, etc...) but it never used period music by the bulk the way that the other shows have.

yeah, I'd be pretty sure that they would keep them in the show. I remember hearing Torn by Natalie Imbruglia in I think 2 episodes of season 1, it was on once at the beginning of the episode and it was being played in the background in Quake, so perhaps it wasn't the original song playing and Paramount couldn't get the rights....

I think with Happy Days, Paramount should see how much $$$ is needed for music for seasons 2-11 and then divide the sum of it by 10. Season 2 was single-camera, the early episodes had a lot more expensive copyrighted music to it, while there were exceptions in the "live" seasons (3-11), the great majority of the songs in those seasons were Potsie original songs. I am sure if Paramount calculated the $3-4 million it takes to clear season 2 and then the super-low prices seasons 3-11 would cost and divide it by 10, they'd probably see that it would pay off in the long run because once the show went before a live audience, there was far far less period 50's music used.

It's not like The Wonder Years or WKRP where every season would be just as expensive as the prior.

Or hell, can't Paramount and Shout!Factory maybe go in half and half and split the rights to Happy Days season 2?

the version on the season 1 DVD was definately the Natalie Imbruglia version

Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley I expected problems, but I don't remember much music in Mork & Mindy. Maybe I'm wrong. All I know is that I want more Mork & Mindy DVD's! I don't care if they have to replace music, all I care about are the episodes themselves.

I worded what I said earlier wrong

I meant that maybe they put in Torn because they couldn't get the rights to a song that may have originally been there.

right, considering TV Land is back to Happy Days season 1, season 2 will be starting in 2-3 weeks. Mork And Mindy hasn't aired regularly in YEARS.

I'm surprised how they were able to keep all the album cover likenesses (like Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, The Cars, ABBA, etc...) in the season 1 DVD. I know there's a part where a customer is holding a copy of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and going "I am getting into Fleetwood Mac, is this a good album of theirs?" to Mindy.

thats what i have been thinking - getting the dvds out with the original music would help promote music that hasn't been popular in decades - hasn't been popular in fact, since Happy Days helped bring in a nostalgic trend in the 70's....

couldn't they make a cross-promotion deal; put coupons in the sets for $$$ off of cd's by the artists featured in each season?

i also think that Paramount should release the NAMES of these holdout artists so we can start a massive online boycott and all-around public humiliation-fest
