Well some of the shows you mentioned weren't "hits" (Phyllis, Sanford Arms, That's My Mama)

I'd say the era where the most HITS came out was

1984-1988
Cosby Show
Night Court
Growing Pains
Kate & Allie
Golden Girls
Valerie/Hogan Family
Designing Women
Perfect Strangers
Head of the Class
Full House
A Different World
Wonder Years
Roseanne
Alf
and I may be forgetting some

1968-1972 was the biggest era for groundbreaking sitcoms I think
All in the Family
Mary Tyler Moore Show
Julia
Maude
... I mean, those 4 right there are 4 of the most groundbreaking of all-time

I hated the 1984-1988 era, because it marks the beginning of the new blood in Hollywood.

I hated the 1984-1988 era because it marks the beginning of the new blood in Hollywood. And this was the when all of the good old shows (And It's Your Move) was cancelled.

You didn't leave any off the list, but you put two on there that weren't hits.
That's My Mama and Sanford Arms.

I added Sanford Arms as a Joke. That's My Mama was a Hit when it was brand new

Well That's My Mama was a hit that got KOed. It didn't capture the era like most of those shows you listed. That was a personal pick.

Shows that are hits their first season mean nothing... Shows can start strong and fade fast

Well that's why 74-78 was a great era for NEW sitcoms. Some of them did fade but this thread was about certain sitcoms being INSTANT hits

Alice ranked #30 in the 1976-1977 ratings, which is much more than I can say about That's My Mama...
