Default I think another actress should have been the Mother on this show because.............

Mabel King was not easy to look at and on top of it she wasn;t funny. Added nothing to the show at all and just mainly was in the way which is why the shoe seemed better when she wasn;t there. I watched a ep last night with the Givens kids and didn;t even miss that the Mother was barley seen. She next to Dee, was my least favorite character

PS-shirley was similar to mabel when it came to looks but was FUNNY AS HELL and when she talked you forgot all about her being big and unattractive-lol

Man, I told you that you got a weird taste in characters. Mabel King was a very good actress. She wasn't meant to be funny. I didn't look for her to say funny stuff. Mabel wasn't used right, that's why she was phased out. How could you dislike her? Dee, I could see. But don't be hatin' Mabel for something that wasn't her strength. She's an actress first, comic last. Remember, the show didn't revolve around her. She provided that strong mother figure. You can't look for everyone to provise you laughs. I like a lot of actors and actresses for different reasons.

Then again, anybody that hates Mother Jefferson doesn't have a sense of humor.

I think Shirley and Florida are the only funny female TV characters from the 70's IMO

Florida wasn't funny. She was like Mabel. Aunt Esther, and Florence were funny too.

I disagree she was the "voice of reason" for the show if there was a lesson it was "mama" who gave it to you.Even Raj level headed as he was Mabel kept him straight.I know thw show lost something when she left and it wasnt the same. Not every mom can look like "Clarie Huxtable "and forher role looks didnt matter.

They wouldn't have mattered if she was a better actress
