They were always cheering in most of the episodes in season 1,but didn't cheer as much in the rest of the seasons. The other reason that I could think of why it happened was that the producers told the audience to not cheer as much

Or, it was a laugh track. I know on the season two features, director David Trainer says the laughter is all real, but I don't buy it. First seasons are almost always tweaked. It lets the audience at home figure out what to laugh at so that future live audiences will be aware.
The cheering was completely unnecessary, in my opinion. |

I hate cheering in any sitcom. It cheapens it in my opinion. The worst culprit is Married with Children.

Yeah, MWC was pretty crazy, though that was real screaming thanks to a devoted fanbase, so at least it wasn't the producers trying to throw us off.
The biggest problem with the MWC screaming was that it always screwed the timing of jokes up. I hate that. It was like when Fonzie would walk in a room and stand there for a minute on Happy Days while the audience clapped. Horrible. |

I don't really mind the cheering and clapping. I don't really notice it that much.

You are really stupid! The laughing is real. The only episode not filmed before a live audience was the Halloween episode in the beginning of season three. And the reason I know this was because I attended the taping of "That '70s Show" that aired last night "Misfire" and also "Sweet Lady" which should air sometime soon. And not only did I get to talk to Fez, Kitty, Kelso (in Misfire), Donna, and Jackie (who is really rude), but I talked to director David Trainer who gave me a copy of the script so I could get it signed, and he told me the audience still goes wild, it just interferes with production and they have to tone it down in editing. The first season they just wanted their home audience to see that their live audience enjoyed it.
Get your facts from the correct people. Warm Wishes, Rick |

This response has bothered me. First of all, being called stupid isn't something we all really want, but that's okay. But since you said that Trainer said people still go crazy, I'm curious as to why you didn't know firsthand since you've been to two tapings.
I still don't believe that all the laughter is real and I don't believe the cheering was all real in the first season. I appreciate you responding here and PMing me, but I'm going to have to go with my gut on this one. |
