Default Florida's Employment Status

I'm sorry if this has already been answered, but I looked and didn't see an answer. Did Florida have a job? I know that she was Maude's maid, but since Maude lived in New York and Florida lived in Chicago, either that was one heck of a commute, or she didn't have a job. Plus - I don't remember seeing anything about Florida et al. moving from New York.

Now, I wasn't around at the time, but I watched in reruns when I was a kid. I asked my mom and she is swearing up and down that Florida was still working for Maude, but when I pointed out that Maude lived in Tuckahoe, New York, which really isn't anywhere near Chicago, she toned down her argument a little. So did Florida have a job? Thanks.

You've just opened another can of worms.

Seriously though, when James was alive, she did not work. When he died, she became a bus driver.

Florida went with James once on an interview and she got the job instead of James. Florida was fired after a few days due to cutbacks.

She never worked again until she worked as a bus driver.

Woohoo - I knew it! I was "fighting" with my mom about how Florida didn't have a job and that the burden was all on poor James (but I call him Frank because I think that Florida and Frank sounds better...and because I know it bugs my mom ) . She told me that I need to get a grip. I don't see it. Ha.

The writers messed up big time here. What was she doing in year 4? Did James have some sort of insurance policy that they were all living off of? What's funny is that with all of the inconsistencies and plot holes in this show it is still so entertaining 30 years later.

I just watched most of the year 4 shows and Florida did indeed work- they just never specified what her job was. Several episodes show her going to or coming from a job, but it must not have paid much because the family had serious money shortages all season long (although the lottery winnings helped a bit). Also I noticed that they made several references to James throughout the season. I thought that they had just left him unmentioned for the most part.

J.J was the only one bringing money into the House during season 4. He was working at the Rib Shack

In the underwear selling episode she goes to work and she also leaves the house to go to church. There are several others where she is seen going off to work or coming home, but I can't remember specifics right this minute. Actually Thelma worked part-time too at Willona's boutique (this was said in the 2 parter JJ's Career), plus Michael worked for Carl, so they all had jobs by the latter part of season 4.
