Default Should someone at the age of 6 to 8 years old watch Local TV News?

I don;t think that a child that age should watch Tv news because it can be very disturbing and uncomfortable for a child to deal with. I think my parents made the mistake of letting me watch TV news at a young age and i remember those horrible stories that made it hard for me to sleep and guess what, i still remember those stories that made me uncomfortable as a child. These are stories that I will always remember that I saw at the age of 6

little boy being shoved in a pipe in a city park
mother chopping off all her baby fingers and toes
Teachers fighting police officers
Police Helicopter dropping a bomb on a family's roof

So just curious at what age did you start watching the news? I started at the wrong age

I agree with you, I started watching adult stuff when I was in that age group, and It was hard for me to fall asleep. I think kids should start watching The News at 10 or 11.

Even at 26, it took me 6 months to get over the 9/11 news story. Normally a news story doesn;t have that affect on me but that story was in a category of it's own

Eh, it never bothered me when I was a younger kid. I didn't worry about any of the stories.

The one story that scarred me as a child was when a couple were tampering with Tylenol bottles to poison them.

Could be. My town may not be as big as yours, but we also get news from Dallas. Weird crap is always going down there. Where I'm at, we've had plenty of kidnappings, murder. It's basically about the same everywhere. No place is safe. Growing up, I started watching a lot of things that I probably should not have. Example, horror movies. At 3 I started watching those, and I was fine. I used to sneak around and watch them. I know the news is real though, and not fake like scary movies. I don't know, I was just never bothered.

I don;t know about NYC, but there is no city in the world like Philly when it comes to Local news. You always get the weirdest news stories here. One story that stand out from the 90's is

A man trying to rob a blind man and when he tried to grab him, the blind was able to get the man off of him and cause the man to fall on his neck arkwardly and he died. then the police was deciding should they charge the blind man with murder-lol

I think it all just depends on the child - some children are more sensitive to disturbing news, than others. :/

I remember watching the news once in a blue moon when I was very young. Plus, I was on the news a lot when I was a little kid...I was one of a handful of hearing impaired kids going to a public school in the city, so reporters would come in every couple of months to do a segment on me or my classroom. I was on the news a few times in 1989, when I was 4. I have some news footage on tape from when I was 6 in 1991 about how I was going to a regular afternoon kindergarten class with hearing kids at school.

It never really bothered me in the least. The first news piece I REALLY remember is when this one girl in Fargo, ND disappeared in mid-1993, when I was 7 going on 8. The girl was about 11 years old then and she had been last seen rollerblading down the street, and somebody just grabbed her. They had "MISSING" posters with her picture on it all over the state, and they never did find her. I think police finally found her remains in the Red River (river that makes up the border of North Dakota and Minnesota) in 1997.

The news would always be on tv when we were having dinner, but I didn't watch or listen to it because I had no interest. I still don't have a big interest in watching the news, I don't do it often.

I never watched the news when I was that young. My parents had it on every night but I just never paid attention to it. I remember certain telecasts like when Pres. Nixon resigned and when Elvis died but I really didn't start watching the news regularly until 1979 during the Iranian Hostage Crises.
