Default Is Chico a Sanford and Son clone?

They have 2 principle charcters, an older and a younger one. Chico took place in a car garage, S&S a junkyard, Redd Foxx had lots of catchphrases, Freddie Prinze had that lookin' good phrase. They both took place in LA. Is Chico and the Man a copycat of Sanford and Son?

TV FYI

Peter Baldwin directed both shows as well as many of the popular sitcoms of the day. I am guessing that the look of the shows and some of the humor could have been crossover. But they were definitely two different shows with two different producers. James Komack was also the producer of other TV shows, but not Sanford and Son. I suppose it would be like comparing all the family oriented sitcoms that are on today.... they all are humor about families, but all have their different premises.

Sanford and Son

Peter Baldwin

Chico and the Man

I don't really find them similar at all. Redd Fox and Demond Wilson just didn't have the chemistry that Freddie Prinze and Jack Albertson had. It was like magic watching Freddie and Jack work together, you could tell they had really grown to love each after 3 seasons...but I never felt that on Sanford and Son. Maybe that's what makes Chico and The Man stand apart from the rest. Just my opinion.

No because Chico was not related to Ed

I agree with Macca. Freddie and Jack had such wonderful chemestry throughout the whole first 3 seasons. I was watching the Boxer episode today and was smiling over the scene where Ed holds Chico's hands and tells him about his bright future of a mechanic. I thought that was touching

I'll agree there were some similarities...(cranky old man who yells alot, young guy with optimism and dreams for the future, poor neighborhoods, both settings were intentionally full of junk and clutter)

But CATM was also about 2 different races, (Ed, who hated "Mexicans", and Chico, who loved everyone), struggling to get along.

The chemistry between Redd and Demond was amusing; but the chemistry between Jack and Freddie was AMAZING! :tehcool:

I agree with Macca and also you could feel that chico and ed grew to love and respect each other, and they weren't even a biological family on the show whereas on sandford and son they were playing real family and (IMO) Fred sanford acted like he really didn't like lamont at all that show really irritates me

I agree JOY.... Fred didnt even LIKE his son most of the time..where u could see Eds affection for Chico.....

I remember a couple of scenes that choke me up..when Chico was gonna move out... and he asked Ed you'd miss me? and one closing scene... when Ed had his hand on CHicos shoulder and said "Goodnight Sweet Prince"

THAT LAST ONE really tugs at my heart....
