Default If The Golden Girls Went On...

What if NBC decided that since Bea wanted to go they were gonna add a new character instead of selling it to CBS for The Golden Palace? Do you think it would still be good with just Sophia and not Dorthy? Also what else could they have done? And if they were to replace Dorthy with a new character what would she be like and who would you have play her?

i'll post mine in a little while...

I would have your basic Golden Girls season only I would add a new roommate too the bunch, Lillian (either played by Vicky Lawrence or Carol Burnett) Rose’s old pal from St. Olaf through out the season we would see Rose’s relationship with Niles crumbling, however Rose tries to hide what she sees and asks Niles to marry her. In the season finally we see the return of Dorothy and Lucas (one time appearance) Blanche can’t find a date so she asks Stanley to go with her, which causes these to couples to out do each other. In the end Lillian makes Rose realize that she is making the wrong descion and she breaks off the wedding, which makes Sophia decide that she wants to be closer to Dorothy and asks if she can move in with her and Lucas. If they went another season it would focus around just the last three girls and also if Blanche wants to finally settle down with one man, Stanley.

a new roommate would never work, maybe a new neighbor who stops by a lot. But Dorothy wouldn't be replaced. It'd be like when they replaced Suzanne and Jean Smart's character on Designing Women, it was never the same

A spin-off with Sophia & her sister Angela could have been something interesting. I thought those two were funny together.

unfortunately, Nancy Walker died in early 1992, when The Golden Girls was in it's last legs

yes, just like Estelle, she wasn't as old as the character. She played on Rhoda in the 70's and was on the short-lived True Colors on Fox right before she died.

I wouldn't have done anything. I think it was crazy to go on without Bea Arthur in any capacity. The Golden Palace is a sorry follow up to such a classic sitcom. The Golden Girls season 7 was it's weakest season and it ended when it should have. They should have just left it with that. No roommate could have ever replaced Bea. It's not like some shows such as Cheers, Roseanne, Ellen, etc. that all had cast members leave and it was still funny. The Golden Girls worked because of the chemistry between those 4 women. There were no main stars, one was not more important than the other. And once you break apart that team, you can't get the chemistry back no matter what you do. This is why The Golden Palace was cancelled after just one season.

Default new roomate

I think the Golden Girls could of continued for an 8th and/or 9th season with a new roommate. I agree the chemistry was great between the orginal four and no one could replace Dorothy, however I think a new character could have given the show some new stuff to work off of. And I think viewers could accept a new character if it was done tastefully and with good effort. The problem with most shows is when they do replace a character with another they just throw them in the mix and hope it works. If they were to get a new roommate they would have need to do it subtly. First start the new season with just three and then have a new friend work into the mix recurring more and more until that person became permemnent cast member and that character could move into the house. People wouldnt feel so upset about Dorothy being replaced. A good examply is Three's Company. I know the situation there is a bit different, and the show wasnt quite as popular afterwards, but When Suzanne Somers left was leaving the show they only had her appear in short clips in a few episodes and brought Cindy Snow on, which didnt make it seem like they were replacing her, just filling the void until should would or wouldnt not return. If they do it write and with some thought on anyshow it can be done.
And on thoughts of a new roommate...I always thought that Truby*(played by Debbie Reynolds) would have been a good replacement.
Well, anywho, those or my thoughts.

IMO, TGG's went on one season too long. By the 7th, it was just a rehash of the same old thing. Just like "The Ropers," etc., GP should have never happened.

Nancy also had two 70's sitcoms that I know of- The Nancy Walker Show and Blansky's Beauties. She is probably best known as "Rosie" in the 70's Bounty paper towel commercials. I swear those Bounty commercials are one of my earliest childhood memories!
