I realy don't care about reviews as long as Warner Bros does not edit the episodes for time I realy don't care. DVD is so much better quality than SLP on VHS

Far more noteworthy as a pop culture reference point than an honest-to-goodness television show, this third and final season box set of Gilligan's Island proves that as long as America talks about you, it doesn't matter if you're any good.

Now hold on a second, Gilligan's fans - my big secret with this review is that before this box set came to my desk, I had never seen an episode of this show. And I'm an avowed TV junkie, which makes this an even more bizarre factoid. I've never seen The Beverly Hillbillies either, if that makes you feel any better.

So while I have been able to hum the theme song for decades and recognize the mugs of Bob Denver and his shipwrecked crew, I had no idea exactly what to expect from Sherwood Schwartz's iconic comedy series. Well, I suppose the first thing to say is that Gilligan's Island is best remembered with nostalgia than revisited with curiosity.

It's not that the scenarios presented in the show aren't goofy and endearing - the relationship between the Skipper and Gilligan alone is worth the price of admission - but even with a few ingenious plot structures (my favorite is the last episode in which Gilligan is convinced he's actually Ginger), the shtick of Gilligan's Island wears thin really fast.

In syndication, one could theoretically watch an episode while wasting some time on a droll Tuesday night and not revisit the show for weeks and weeks afterward - that's the way to appreciate Gilligan's Island. TV on DVD has definitely pulled the curtain away from the previous methods with which we viewed TV (sure, a show can be good, but how good is it when you've watched six straight episodes?), and Gilligan's Island, alas, is no exception to that rule.

Fans will embrace this swan song of the show's initial run with equal parts fervency and melancholy - it is, after all, the manifestation of the end of an era - but for folks like myself who have (for better and for worse) never come across the wiles of Gilligan's Island, this box set definitely leaves a bit to be desired.
The Video: How Does The Disc Look?

Not bad at all. The cheese factor on this DVD set might be through the roof, but these video transfers of the show's original 1.33:1 full frame presentations is full of the kind of sharp, bounding color one simply doesn't expect from fare this old. Color contrast is exceptional, with great boundary and dynamism, black levels are consistent and impressive, and fine detail quality is simply as poppy and crisp as anything I've seen from TV-on-DVD from the ‘60s. Well done.

The Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?

The mono mixes aren't as flabbergasting as the video transfers, but they get the job done. Part of the charm of this show's cheeky theme music is that it sounds as mono and tinny as they come, so the fact that dialogue, effects, and atmospherics suffer the same fate is of little matter.

Also included are English, French, and Spanish subtitles, and English Closed Captions.
Supplements: What Goodies Are There?

This is where this edition really comes up short. We get a short season introduction from creator Sherwood Schwartz as well as a screen-specific audio commentary from the man (on “The Producer”). But first of all, almost everything he talks about has been addressed in other box sets devoted to Gilligan's Island, and while his knowledge of TV from this era is simply staggering, his presentation of it is admirable yet droll. For fans only.

And the definitive documentary on disc three? Well, it's twelve minutes long and it mostly has celebrities talking about how much they love Gilligan's Island. Some of the analysis presented in the doc is fascinating, but the show deserved a more impressive doc than this one.
Exclusive DVD-ROM Features: What happens when you pop the disc into your PC?

There are no DVD-ROM supplements on this DVD.

Final Thoughts

Like much TV on DVD, this set is perfect for those who adore Gilligan's Island and a bore for anybody else. The video transfers here are exceptional, but the sound mixes and extra features come up short, seeing as this was the last season of the famed series. For $40, it'll take serious fandom to merit picking this one up.

I could not copy the link so I copied the review.

I don't count this as a review because he says this was the first time he has ever seen the show. I have no clue how thats possible

Yeah, I like that review! Even after the original distressing review, I was still optimistic, actually! Just wanted to point out the review.

Let's be lucky we have some bonus features. All in the family, The Andy Griffith Show, Good Times, Sanford and Son, Green Acres, all had no extra features on their DVD sets.

No, it makes me think someone who's not seen either of these TV icons can't be taken very seriously as a reviewer of anything.

And his attention to detail leaves a lot to be desired.

Of course not everyone is going to like the show but to knock it just for the sake of it is annoying to me.

I wouldn't worry about that bad review. He said he never watched the series, so he has no idea of the true meaning of Gilligan's Island. If Season 3 is anything like Season 1 & 2, I'm sure it will be fantastic. Warner Brothers does an excellent job at clean-up.
