Who would actually pay money for syndicated versions on a DVD? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I will never pay for a syndicated version on DVD because I could just record the eps myself off cable-Example, Cosby show-lol I know some of you made find this to be extra picky but when I found out 10 seconds were cut from one of the Three's Company season 4 DVD, i never went to go buy it. I still will but it's not a big rush because I want the COMPLETE 4th season, not a 4th season with a missing tag scene. So who else refuses to pay a dime for a TV SHOW on DVD that is CUT? I may pay if it's a short-lived tv show but that's it

If the show doesn't air on cable, I'll get it even if its cut, but like you.... its less of a priority.

With stuff like The Cosby Show, I don't need to pay for something that I can get on TV for free. Luckily, I'll be getting it on DVD for free, so I won't have to worry.

So you would still watch a CS DVD even if someone gave it to you for free? Not me

it depends, is the show currently airing? If something like Gimme A Break, One Day At A Time or The Facts Of Life turned out to be the edited episodes (don't get any idea Universal or Sony!!), I would still want to have them because I love the shows and it's not like I'm going to see them on N@N, TBS, TV Land, USA, whatever, I'd be disapointed but I'd still buy them.

I love The Cosby Show and was excited to own the episodes in the form I haven't seen them in since I was five years old. If Best Buy or someone runs a sale for it for $17.99 like they did ALF (which was also notoriously cut), I might consider it, but why pay over $30 when I could get the same versions off TBS or N@N for the purchase of a blank tape?

Depends on the price, like BS79 said. I'm still not sure if I'm getting TCS, but there's no way I'm paying $35+ for it now. I want to see what Urbanworks' excuse is and if they intend to fix this, especially after the lie in their press release.

The only thing that could be exciting about a Cosby show DVD is seeing them UNCUT. Me and you both have seen those first season eps over and over so it's nothing I'm going to put in my DVD player

To me in the grand scheme of things it's not that big of a deal. I mean it would be simply awesome if every show that comes out on DVD was the complete unedited, music in tact show that that you watched on TV. I mean take ALF or the Cosby Show which used the syndicated versions instead of the originals what's missing like 2 minutes? When Seinfeld came out and said the episodes haven't been seen since it's original airing. I've been watching Seinfeld reruns for almost 10 years and I didn't notice a single diffrence. So if that's what the other syndicated shows are like and that's all we get, fine by me. At least we get the show on DVD. For me owning the show is the most important thing, a few minutes or music that's diffrent dosen't really matter I just want my show. I'm not saying I agree with what some studios are doing but i'm just saying if you really want your show isn't that what's important? Also the music thing I know alot of people on the internet have complained about Quatum Leap, Wonder Years & Freaks & Geeks and many many others, saying they won't buy it, how it won't be the same. I can't understand that because for me music is great but if missing i'm not going to not get it. An example Keen Eddie came out on DVD last year it was my favourite show and some of the music was missing. But all the music I liked on the show I just downloaded anyway, so while I noticed some missing stuff it just dosen't bother like it does others. For me like I said the show is the most important thing.

The first season is my favorite though. Especially the pilot, the whole "Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. No wonder you get Ds in school" conversation between Cliff and Theo is the funniest scene of the entire series, and has me laughing out loud everytime I see it.

If one of your favorite albums of all time was remastered on CD, but however, 20 seconds were shaved off each song, would you still wanna buy it?

So you honestly think Sony should go "screw complete Seinfeld episodes" and release the syndicated abominations that air 6 times a day on TBS on DVD instead?

I agree to a degree that having most of a program is better than none. But it's the principal of the thing. Why should we spend our money on a half-assed product? UrbanWorks claimed in the press release that we'd be getting full, uncut episodes. They haven't lived up to their promise, and it's pretty clear to me that they aren't trying to put out a quality release that fans have been looking forward to for years; they're simply trying to find the easiest and cheapest way to make money.

The Full Length Episode I thought is what viewers paid for. The quality is no big deal, I want to see the Network Versions.

Talking about cds, something like that did happen when Prince's 1999 was originally released. My favorite, I mean favorite song, D.M.S.R. was left off the original pressings because a single cd at that time could only hold a certain amount of music. Knowing that, I bought the cd anyway because at the time that was my only option to have that album on cd.

I don't think it's wrong for Felix to feel the way he does. For some people it's just not so important to have the exact original broadcast version of a show on dvd. For some, just having the show is enough, and I can accept their side too. I agree with most here of course that releases should be original and complete, and I'm more likely to not buy something if I know that it's edited. But if it's not a big deal for other consumers, that's okay for them. One person said that the missing footage isn't a big deal, another says that (good) quality isn't a big deal. Neither is wrong if that's their preferences. The only ones wrong in this situation are the companies who knowingly or not put out incomplete or edited product.

To me, the best part about having shows on DVD is to have them uncut with clear picture and no annoying bugs in the corner of the screen. So whenever I find that a set is edited, I get ticked off. If it's one of my favorite shows, I'd still buy it, as I did for "ALF". However, I've had the season 1 ALF set for almost a year now, I I've only watched a little bit of it. But of course with ALF, I hadn't seen the show in years. Had it been played like "The Cosby Show", I might not have bought it, especially since I now have a DVD recorder.

However with "Too Close for Comfort", I bought season 1, unaware that it was edited episodes. I fell in love with the show, and still planned on buying the rest of the series, edited. Luckily, season 2 was uncut.

As for "Saved by the Bell", it ticks me off so much. I was excited when I thought I was getting the show uncut. And maybe a few of the episodes in the set were uncut (some had the original opening, others didn't). As most of you know, SBTB were mostly syndicated episodes. Fortunately, "The College Years" and "The New Class" are handled by Image Entertainment, uncut. Hopefully they'll do the original series right.

I'm not a fan of "The Cosby Show" and I wasn't planning to buy the set. But I still feel bad for the people who like the show and want the uncut episodes.
