What do you think? It's aired quite a bit on different channels.

I'm sure it will sell fine, and even if it doesn't, UrbanWorks has rights to all 8 seasons IIRC, so they'll most likely release them. I also predict that a lot of people will (smartly) boycott the release since the episodes are edited--I haven't decided yet if I'll be one of them.

I wont buy it edited or not. No use spending my hard earned money when if I want to see TCS I can turn on the TV at pretty much any given time and see a show and if I watch it on different channels I can prob actually see the whole show from different channels editing at different parts.

I would never buy an edited series that was on TV as much as TCS has been.

if Cosby WASN'T on 5 times a day on 4 different channels, I'd consider it. But it's too overplayed for it to be acceptable.
I have Diff'rent Strokes season 1 and four of the episodes are edits (the two two-parters), but it didn't bother me because it's not like I can just turn on TBS or whatever and see DS, DVD's my only way to see the show currently. Cosby is different. |

What I have learned is mostly sitcomsonline members only care about buying Edited DVD's. People who are just fans of the show and not a member of this board will buy it anyway and never know that it's edited. It's only us who care about the missing scenes because we are Die Hard TV fans. Someone let me know if I'm wrong

I wouldn't say that that's a bad thing. A little much? Yes, but some people are purists, and they don't want the episodes altered in any way, which I respect but don't agree with.
However, in the case of a release I was on the fence with, if the episodes were cut even slightly that probably would make me decide not to pick it up. Ren and Stimpy is the best example of that for me. The thing is, I was never on the fence about The Cosby Show until yesterday, when I found out about the syndicated versions. I had every intention of buying it, and now I'm not sure. I'm actually kind of angry at Carsey Werner for not allowing a better company to produce these. Fox, Paramount, Achor Bay, among others, have time and time again delivered high-quality TV on DVD products. And for whatever reason, Carsey Werner is having their shows released by companies like those, with the exception of their best-loved and most famous show, The Cosby Show. It's disrespectful to Bill, disrespectful to the rest of the cast and crew of TCS, and most of all, disrespectful to the fans who have been wanting this release for years. |

I mean, he's only paying $.63 per complete episode if he wants to pretend the one with the 10 second clip of White Christmas ending at the end doesn't exist. I would find it odd that any MTM fan would out and out boycott it even for that cheap if they're a fan of the show. Because 1. it's the 25-26 minute episodes that haven't been on the air since 1970-1971 and 2. it's not currently running in US syndication. |

True, and if I was a MTM fan, I wouldn't let the 10-second edit make me avoid the purchase. But even though the Ren and Stimpy set apparently had very few cuts, I and many others still chose not to buy it because like TCS, it was falsely advertised: the box sported a big "UNCUT" on the cover.
But like you said, it's a very different situation with TCS--every single episode is missing around 2 minutes of footage. That's 48 missing minutes--that's more than an hour-long show runs these days when you take out commercials. How is this in any way acceptable? If one or two episodes were syndicated versions, then perhaps I wouldn't care. But from the sound of it, they all are. For those who don't really care, think of it this way: by using syndicated episodes, the running time of this set is the same as if they had used uncut episodes, but decided to remove two episodes from the season. As someone said on HTF, if this was some one-season, obscure 80s sitcom that hasn't been syndicated since the early 90s, then I could live with the cuts. But this is The Cosby Show--perhaps the biggest show of the 1980s, and one that is credited with saving the sitcom. It's a shame that they had to go with some third-rate company because Bill Cosby is friends with the owner. |
