I'm wondering something, maybe you guys can help me.

When your hair gets pretty long...say 5+ inches past your shoulders, it starts becoming easier for it to get tangled and you usually have to spend a significant amount of time de-tangling your hair. Well, that's how it's with me anyway. My hair is about 6-7 inches past my shoulders now -- pretty long. I've never had it that long past my shoulders, actually. I've usually grown it to 3-4 inches past my shoulders before I got it all chopped off.

How do you guys deal with your long hair at night so it's not too badly tangled when you wake up in the morning? Any other tips to keep your hair looking nice? Thanks!

I know exactly what you mean Allison. The last time I got it chopped right to the nape of my neck - it had been almost to my waist and I would lie on it at night, and go to roll over, but have to move my hair out from under my bodyweight. Drove me nuts. I've now got it just below the bra-line again but I put it in a low, loose ponytail before going to bed - at the nape of the neck. It doesn't get in the way then and I don't get "caught" on it the same. It also keeps it a lot better for styling the next morning. Sometimes I I leave it loose and it gets a little hot during the night, I've had one side curl or go fuzzy on me - this way, it doesn't fall around my neck in order to do that or tangle.

(I remember when those beehive hairdos were in during the 60s - my mom had one and would wear this silly piece of foam wrapped around her head and held with tape - today it would probably be velcro - looked SO stupid)!

I don't know if I'm going to be any help since I couldn't care less about my hair, LOL. But my hair is very long, it goes to my waist when it's down (it doesn't really matter though, because it's always up in a ponytail LOL). When I wash it at night, I just comb it until all the tangles are out. I grab the ends and just brush them all out. Then afterwards, I put it up in a ponytail right away so that it can get out of my face. It's not that hard for me to manage even though I've got very thick hair. I've done this for years, and I've never had any problems.

That reminds me of my advanced desktop publishing teacher from last semester. She had hair down to her waist, and she almost never pulled it back so it was always all over the place. Her hair fascinated me to no end...It didn't seem to bother her, which is why it fascinated me.

I had thought about the ponytail thing and I see you and I Love John Ritter do the same thing, so I'll be doing the same now.

It is NOT fun having naturally curly hair... for me, it frizzes really easily in the summertime which makes it even more difficult to comb my hair.

I hear ya there!! It got so bad with my "pubic head" that I have a patch of hair around the right side of my neck that's about 4" shorter than the rest of my hair! For some strange reason, it gets tangled the worst and I've had some bad breakage with it. I CAN'T stand this fine, curly hair in the summer. That's actually the reason I keep it long - the weight makes it a little more managable. When I had it chopped, it was in a style similar to Princess Diana's - looked good when styled and sprayed to a "helmut head", but in the mornings - I'd wake up and even got called "Doll's Hair Head"!!

Had I been blonde with a trenchcoat and horn, I'd look just like Harpo Marx!

I worked with a girl who had hair past her waist and she never put it up either. I would have been fascinated too, but she drove me nuts with it - she was one of those "hair players" - constantly touching, stroke, hand brushing, flicking it a la Cher - and it looks straggly because of it. That was during the 80s when banana combs, ponytails and "up-do's" were so popular too so she stuck out with this mane - I think that's why she left it - she was the office slut really - had to go back one night to pick something up around 6:30, walk in, and here's her and a married guy (with 5 kids) who worked in the dept. next to us going at it on her desk. EEEEWWWWW! I put Alka-Seltzer tabs in her fishtank after that!!

Find a nice young stud that will brush it out for you every morning!

I've had enough practice that now I can reach behind my back and comb my hair if need be.

I have naturally curly hair too and it is constantly getting tangled. It's getting pretty long. Right now its a little past the middle of my back. No matter how I wear it at night whether it's put up or hanging down, it's still all tangled in the morning. Every morning or whenever I comb my hair for that matter it has to be wet in order for the comb to even go through it so I just put my head under the sink every morning and get it all wet and then comb it. I use a wide tooth comb and start combing at the ends and work my way up. I put mousse in it to help tame the frizzies but I never use the blow dryer or anything hot on it. I always let it air dry and use plenty of conditioner (Rusk is my favorite brand) when I wash it.
When I can get around to having this tangled mess straightned I will definitely have that done.

It's easier if you start combing at the ends of your hair instead of the top, and combing the "under part" of your hair. If you know what I mean. I also take a comb with me in the shower and comb out my hair while the conditioner is still in it before washing it out. And I just put it in a floppy bun at night at the top of my head.

Me too. And yeah - hold the hair about midway down and then comb from the bottom up - it'll help prevent breakage.

Oh my god..I have natural curly hair. It was never that curly when I was a kid, but now..it's so curly now. And if I start brushing it while it's dry..man you don't know how puffy it will get. Actually, my hair is about 2 inches past my shoulders and I might let it grow but I'm not sure. All I know is my hair is such a pain.
