Question A bizarre comment on "FOL"

Remember when Nancy, Sue Ann and Cindy are reunited with Blair, Natalie and Tootie? Well, I remember a very bizarre comment made by Tottie about the absence of Molly. This is exactly how the comment went (for those with this episode, chech it out).

Blair: Too bad Molly couldn't make it.

Tootie: I know. I called her mom and she said that Molly was busy.

Blair: Doing what?

Tootie: I don't know, she wouldn't tell me!

Does this make any sense to any of you?! If any of you have any comments about this, please let me know.

That's very strange, it's like they couldn't come up with a clever line to show why Molly Ringwold couldn't be on that episode, even though she was at that time the biggest young actress on the planet! Her character, they could have done something with that in that episode. "I don't know, she wouldn't tell me" is not an adequate response. Don't leave people hanging in a story!

Oh No

I know. But that is what they said. To this day I still don't get it, but whatever!

I think it was a joke about how molly ringwald is now a big star and didn't want or even need to return to Facts of Life for that episode. at the time only die hard fans would have gotten the joke because if they didn't see the first season and didn't know molly was in the show, they would have been like "What are they talking about". oh there was other girls, who's molly.

I think it was just a joke on how she was fired from the show and became this big star, too busy to do an episode of Facts. It also might have been an inside joke for the Facts cast, with the writers, saying she became a big star and the rest of the cast didn't. I know that this episode was supposed to be centered around the Molly character, because she was a star, but for some reason, must have turned it down.

Who knows, only the writers know, but there are several ways to interpret this comment.

yes, that's how I took it. An inside joke about how Molly Ringwald was a bonafide movie star in 1986. There was a similar inside joke about George Clooney in the reunion movie.

Actually, Cindy's line in the reunion episode was "all her mom would say was that she was busy -- VERY busy." Read between the lines and it actually IS a pretty good joke... (too busy making John Hughes movies, that is.) ;-)
