Default Update

Yes this case was updated although it was unsatisfying to most viewers in 1992 & 1996 respectively Bob Dozier and John Russell the masterminds behind the "Freedom Fraud" were arrested and given short sentences (both under a year I believe) - They were then released - Both claim to have no idea what happened to either Russell's wife or Tomlin.

Later.

Default To make a long story short

Bob Dozier and John Russell were two friends who went off sailing to Tahiti with Russell's wife Sherry and another girl Kristin Tomlin. A few days later both men washed up on shore on San Francisco saying their boat had been capsized by a large frieghter and the women were lost at sea. Russell was sporting a sprained ankle. The men soon disappeared and the women and the boat were never found over the next few weeks officials began to learn that Russell, Dozier and Russell's wife whose real name was Sherry had over 21 different aliases. It was also discovered that their boat the "Freedom 2" might have not sunk at all but was the focus in an insurance fraud scheme - Evidence was also found that Russell and Dozier might have been trafficing drugs and might have murdered their two companions.

Personally I don't know why everyone thinks Tomlin is the little innocent victim here. I think she was in on it from the start with the other three. If Russell and Dozier made their drug run as the police claimed they would have made millions - Offering a handfull of a few cool thousands to a twenty year old kid might have enticed Tomlin to come along.

Nobody has ever learned the true fate of the boat, the drug run or the women although Russell and Dozier were captured in the early 90s as stated above.

I recently acquired an NBC UM from '88 and was suprised to find an update on this case but not the update Lifetime always airs. When the segment was initially broadcast a woman came forward and said three people agreed to purchase her boat and she said they were the Doziers' and Bob Russell. They apparently paid only 1/10 of the purchase price than stole the boat. The suprising thing was this transaction took place a year AFTER they had their boat "accident". So that would definitely put the wife in cahoots with the other two. I'm assuming Lifetime chooses to air the most recent update where the two men were captured. The most mysterious question is where is Kristin Tomlin? The segment seemed to imply that she didn't realize what she was getting into and to be quite honest I wouldn't be suprised if she was murdered by the other three. What other explanation would there be since the other three have been spotted numerous times and there has been no sign of her?

Now I know that I wasn't imagining things. This is the update about the "Freedom 2", that I was talking about in the thread about a possible volume 13. This update originally aired in the same episode that featured the segments about Kurt Sova, and the murder of Father Reynaldo Rivera from Santa Fe, New Mexico and the disappearance of Father John Carrigan from Ronan, Montana. As you have mentioned CD, the "NBC" update contradicts the "Lifetime" update. In my opinion, it would be very interesting, if volume 13 (or a future volume), includes this case with the "two" updates.

Yes I plan on putting that one along with the two updates on volume 13. Another case I'm thinking of including on there is the murder of the wild horses. Another strange fact on that one that is on my NBC version they have an update and show a few guys that have been arrested but Lifetime never shows an update on this one (that I remember anyway). What could be up with that? Could the men have been acquitted or released and therefore thats why Lifetime doesn't find it necessary to air it?

found this article CrystalDawn that may shed a little light on the case.

http://www.kbrhorse.net/news/hrskil01.html

apparently there were more killings and no one has been prosecuted in the case. So I would assume those arrested had been found not guilty or the charges dropped.

Ah....if you keep reading and go on to pages 2 and 3 it says they captured 3 marines in the cases of shooting some of the horses, but most charges were dropped. They did admit some guilt however. I have the feeling that there is no one person or group involved in killing these horses. It's probably been many different people at different points in time.

Is this boat segment the same as the Freedon? Or did I read a typo somewhere and it was the Freedom? Or, are they two entirely different segments?

The case you are referring to is about Lisa Bishop (and that guy "Florian") and the "Freedon" a freighter headed for Haiti (the case originally aired on October 17 1990). This case is already included on CD´s volume 6. The case about the "Freedom 2" , it´s an earlier segment (it originally aired on November 9 1988). This cargo vessel was headed for Tahiti. The case about the "Freedom 2" hasn´t been included on CD´s collection.

Hint, hint, CD

Yes dear. I'm working on making volume 13 as we speak and it will be on there. I was gonna explain the segment to you but its just so darn confusing, I'll just let you watch it for yourself.
