In a 1976 TV Guide, Bea Arthur blamed Bill Macy for her not winning an Emmy, because he got drunk at a Norman Lear dinner and cursed a lot. "He's a baby," she said.
Anyone else hear any stories about this? I dont want to ask Bill Macy. Sometimes stars dont want to talk about these things. |

Maybe that's why their on-screen fights were so realistic!!

In an interview (the long Archive-something -or other one posted on Youtube) Bea mentioned that at the time of the TVland airing of Maude, she called him, and they talked about the show. She talked of Maude as if she were just an ordinary viewer, not someone who had been involved in making it! She was impressed by how good some of it was. I loved how unpretentious she seemed--she mentioned waking up at 4:00 am to watch or tape Maude!
Anyway, my point, if I had one, LOL, was that they must get on adequately enough. I doubt one could work successfully with someone one hated for six years. I would guess that her annoyance was temporary, and passing. It was perhaps indiscreet of her to have brought it up in an interview...but that's her prerogative, certainly. But I really have no stomach for speculations of this kind, or gossip. The relationships of these people in real life is their business. |
