Default George Jefferson's brother, Henry

I have been a fan of THE JEFFERSONS since ALL IN THE FAMILY.

I am curious......how come Henry was never a cast member on The Jeffersons?

I can't recall if Henry was even mentioned on The Jeffersons.

Does anyone know the story behind that?

I figured that their mother was on the Jeffersons, why not his brother?

Because the actor, Mel Stewart, who played the Role of Henry Jefferson was no longer interested in that role and wanted to explore other opportunities. He He left All in the Family so he could star in a Military Comedy called "Roll Out" in 1973. And then he would make guest apperances on other shows like Good Times before starring in another Comedy called "On the Rocks" in 1975.

I watched On The Rocks in reruns. Right now, I can't remember an episode.

It have been years and years I watch that show.

You sure know your TV quite well.

Yeah it comes from doing lots of reading about TV shows from the past. I did lots of research on the Jeffersons and Good Times. I was finally able to see an episode of On The Rocks this year. It was a episode that was actually recorded on CBS in 75

In one of the early Jeffersons episodes George commented that he had to wear his brother's hand me down clothes. Also Gary Coleman appeared as George's nephew in a year 4 show- and was specifically referred to as George's brother's son. In the first episode of ER in 1982 Lynne Moody's character was referred to as George's neice. But I don't believe that the actual name "Henry" was ever used in any of Jeffersons episode.

Also lynne Moody never played the role of George Jefferson niece on the Jeffersons which made George Jefferson's appearance on ER in 1984, very ODD.

Henry Jefferson was a great charecter that should have continued on in the Jefferson's series...It seemed as if they tried to make it seem that George was an only child after.

I think a couple of Guest apperances would have been nice but not as a cast member

Henry and his wife, Ruby, were both mentioned by name in "Uncle George and Aunt Louise."

Mel Stewart was such a funny, underrated character actor - his appearance in the "Not With My Sister, You Don't" episode of the Bob Newhart Show is hilarious!! He also reunited with Sherman Hemsley in the Amen episode entitled "California Dreaming".

I would say a reoccuring character. Some storylines could have been made with him to add the continuity from All in the Family.

On youtube you can find the opening credits for Roll Out the show that Mel Stewart left AITF for. I know he was in Scarecrow and Mrs King in the last 2 seasons of the Jeffersons, but I suppose that if they really wanted him to come in to do an appearance or 2 they could have (esp. in the 80s when someone like him would have been a welcome change of pace)- but honestly I think that the Henry character as seen in AITF was too abrasive for what the Jeffersons was from 1981 onward- George was meek and tame in comparison to what Henry had been a decade earlier (and George was originally suppoed to have been much more abrasive). He would not have fit into this series at all.
