Here's a poem I wrote for John:
My Best Friend My life has been full of ups and downs, Good times and bad, Smiles and frowns. At one point in my life where there seemed to be no way out, I turned on the TV as I normally do and I discovered something that would change my life forever. On the screen was a comedy called “Three’s Company,” It had a trio of friends, Jack, Janet and Chrissy sharing an apartment in L.A. The actor who played Jack immediately caught my eye, The credits said John Ritter was his name. I ran to my mother for her advice, “Who is this man? I really must find out!” She shook her head with a laugh. “Don’t get any ideas,” she said, “He’s the same age as your grandmother.” “Who cares?” I answered back, “He makes me laugh and he’s extremely handsome, that’s all that matters to me.” From that point on, John and I were inseparable as I watched him on TV each night. Our relationship went from “Three’s Company” to his movies eventually to his new show “8 Simple Rules.” I watched with delight as John made me laugh until I cried. I thought that things couldn’t get any better, but everything was about to change. On September 11, 2003, I went through my normal daily routine of school and watching “Three’s Company.” That night, my mom came into my room to put away some clothes. “Oh by the way, that actor you like, he died today,” she said casually. “You mean John Ritter?” I asked and she nodded. “No Way!” I screamed as I ran to the den to turn on the TV. There on the screen was John’s picture and the words, “Dead at 54.” in bold letters. I sunk to the floor, my face frozen in shock. I cried everyday for two weeks after hearing the news. My family and my friends said that I was crazy for crying over someone I never met, But they just didn’t understand, This man had become my best friend, my soul mate, and now he was gone. Even today I still cry sometimes when I think of this terrible loss. I pray for Amy and Jason, Carly, Tyler, and Stella, as they struggle with the death of their husband and father. This is supposed to get easier, but it only seems to get harder. So John, I shed a tear for you today, My best friend who was taken away. -Lauren |
