yet another question about shows being available

hi, just another question to ponder. why is it that you can't find any episodes of some shows at all? for instance, there seems to be no episodes available out there for the steve harvey series "me & the boys". in all my searches, i have only found one episode of this show. again voice your idea or opinion on this. let us know. thanks

As time has gone by, less and less people are recording tv and creating their own sets. The "collecting" demographic has severely shifted to the "pass the buck" folks that merely want to trade for shows (and not willing to make things themselves, this is how most profiteers are), or are content trading rips (which is pointless). It's as simple as that.

i would make more sets of shows, but theres a very limited amount of good tv content on direct tv sat

if i lived in chicago and had the me-tv channel

i would record about 10 hours a day

its just not avaible for me

i am doing grace under fire right now, its funny that i never see anyone ever have it or ask for it

I live in the Chicago area and ME TV is not available to 99% Cable or Dish customers . It is a weak local station and you need a very strong antenna to get a good signal. I watched some of the shows but taping was fruitless.

That's too bad, cuz there's at least 3 shows on their current schedule I'd love to get!

its on digital cable , in some areas of chicago, i have a friend who lives near the hancock tower that has it on their cable system

What's the one episode of Me and the Boys that's out there? I have one episode myself. It's The Talent Show episode with the 4 Tops. It was a funny episode that they were scrapping up talent for a talent show. The best Steve could get was this guy named Junior Lavelle. He had a one hit wonder song everyone remembered but nobody could remember all the words too. It had a funny ending when Lavelle finally appeared to sing his song.

I have grace under fire on video and no one wants to trade videos anymore. I have shows like gimmie a break on video in good quality and other rare shows that if I post that newbies won't believe I have it so I am keeping those show to myself. But I would be doing those shows on dvd if it came on tv. I just tape way to much.

If some oddball old TV show is running on some local station in your area, then it makes perfect sense to DVD those and trade 'em.

I grab practically every old, seldom-shown, show that gets broadcast locally, especially if it's uncut. Doesn't matter to me if I care about it, or like it, or not. I figure it'll always be good trade fodder and somebody will appreciate it.

Anybody else do this? Or do people mainly stick to things that they personally want?

There are several reasons why some shows are just not available on DVD or tape at all.

First, some shows only had a very short run and then disappeared forever. Vengeance Unlimited (1998), Lazarus Man (1996), HOT L BALTIMORE (1975), Wizards and Warriors (1983), Quark (1978), The Conspiracy Zone (2000). Most of these shows are available but hard to find. HOT L BALTIMORE and The Conspiracy Zone don't seem to be available at all.

Also, some shows have had their master prints destroyed. The guy who created My LIving Doll reportedly destroyed the negatives for the show in frustration when it was cancelled. Only a handful of 16mm prints of some epieosdes now exist. Ernie Kovacs' show was taped on 2-inch quadruplex video recorders in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and NBC re-used some of the master tapes, recording over 'em. Amos and Andy only exists on kinescopes and some of hte kinescpes were destroyed.

Lastly, some shows have never been re-run, so if someone didn't tape the show when it was originally boradcast, no one has it. Almost no one has the original 1987 Tracey Ullman Show. No one seems to have taped HOT L BALITMORE. No one seems to have taped The Conspiracy Zone. Almost no one seems to have taped Small Wonder. The only way anyone could have taped HOT L BALITMORE is with an expensive 3/4-inch U-Matic industrial videotape recorder, and back then these monsters cost around $3500 in 1975 dollars, with each 60-minute tape costing around $60.

FYI, the 3/4" U-Matic videotape recorder was invented in 1970. The Quadruplex 1-inch open reeel videotape recorder appeared in 1964. The quadruplex 2-inch open reel-tape recorder was invented in 1954. No ordinary private citizen I've ever heard of had a quadruplex open reel tape recorder, however, until they became obsolete and private collectors began picking 'em up for peanuts. These things were used by the big TV networks and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Does look like anyone recorded "Checking In" either from CBS in 1981.
