Default Have Russell Crow's antics hurt 'Cinderella Man'?

I heard from a friend at work that Russell Crow's act of hitting a person with a telephone have actually hurt promotion of Ron Howard's new movie "Cinderella Man", that this stunt has killed it at the box office. Anyone know anything about this?

No, haven't heard anything official, but I hardly think that one little incident (especially after knowing Crowe's reputation) would hurt the movie. I just heard critics say that it's a good movie, but no Million Dollar Baby. I'm no huge fan of Crowes, but I wouldn't let it stop me from seeing it.

I think fans are more put off antics like what Cruise is doing right now. THAT should be interesting to see if it hurts War of the Worlds. I did hear though that the movie is apparently Spielberg's "masterpiece" and should do well no matter what - they might just wonder how much better it could have done without TomKat and his recent achievement of self-appointed shrink to the stars.

I seriously doubt that. That is ridiculous. People are going to watch a movie because it interests them, not because what an actor does in his spare time.

it could be the cast, the movie has gotten nothing but great reviews yet has performed rather mediocrely. I don't think anybody expected it to gross Star Wars type of money, but I don't even think it's broken $50 million yet, and I'm sure they were at least aiming for $100 million considering the trio of Crowe, Zelweger and Howard.

could be the case, but I do think negative publicity can lead to backlash. For example, people were sick of hearing about Russell and Meg Ryan and Proof Of Life was expected to be a huge hit and nobody went to see it, same thing with Bennifer, people were so sick of them parading their relationship (which we saw how much it lasted the test of time) around that people avoided Gigli in droves even before word got out it was a bad movie.

The failure of "Cinderella Man" can be blamed on wrong timing. This film needed to be released during the holiday season.

I wouldn't be surprised if they re-released it.

Good point. I know they usually do release the major action/adventure movies in the summer, but this one does seem better suited for the holiday season. It'll probably do quite well on DVD.

Most movies do nowadays. Look at "Donnie Darko" and "Napoleon Dynamite."

true, Cinderella Man seems like the type of movie they'd release in December for Oscar season, not during the time of year that is best for sequels, remakes and big-budget action flicks

I agree. Cinderella Man isn't a summer movie. It was a big risk for them to try to take on Star Wars.

I have no doubt they'll re-release it sometime in the fall before the movie biz starts buzzing about the Oscars.

I love Cinderella Man! I love Russell Crowe. He is such a good actor. Russell is what you call one of those tempermental type actors.

I don't really like Crowe at all, but I loved Cinderella Man. I'm also surprised they didn't save it for Oscar season.

I think he deserves a Oscar nod for his role in Cinderella Man but with all the drama that he's making he may not get one and it's a shame because he is a great actor.

Thumbs up

I just watched Cinderella Man, and I loved it. It's one of the best movies I've seen this year. I'll be very surprised if Crowe isn't nominated for an Oscar.

No because people went to see War of the Worlds and look at how crazy Tom Cruise is acting. People just didn't see Cinderella Man either because when it was released or because after Million Dollar Baby. Shame too, Cinderella Man was brilliant and more entertaining than Million Dollar Baby in my opinion.
