Why Anthony George was so bad as Burke#2 - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

George was a friend of Frank Schofield (Bill Malloy). They were from the same town in upstate New York. When Mitch Ryan due to drinking problems was dropped from DS it was probably Schofield (no longer on DS himself) who recommended George to try for Burke. Once George tried and got the role he only then realized how far-fetched a show DS really was. HOW IT WAS COMPLETELY NOTHING LIKE REAL-LIFE IN ANY WAY. This probably very much affected his performance in every way as he was too reserved on camera as he was wondering just what kind of a freaky show his friend Schofield had talked him into joining. Eventually George (now playing Jeremiah Collins) dropped from DS on purpose. He wasn't fired! I heard George went on to another soap opera (one that was more like real life at least as far as soaps usually go) and did brilliantly in it.

That's interesting. I liked the "original" Burke better but this might explain a lot. I guess I don't understand why he would necessarily object this way to being on D.S. First of all, it's a paying job!!!! LOL! Second of all, being an actor, he's paid to "act." To me, it seems like he would have taken this as a challenge, i.e., a role that was more difficult in presenting challenges to undertake. Thirdly, it would seem strange that someone in his position at that time would want to leave D.S. than for no other reason than it was so wildly popular at the time. i.e., he surely must have known how popular the show was at that time. So if for no other reason, even if he didn't necessarily like the role he was playing, at least he was getting a lot of exposure by being on such a popular show. Anyway, you've got me curious now---is that the reason that they killed off his character (via the planewreck in Brazil) because he wanted to leave the show???? Or was that planewreck planned for his character all along anyway????

The plane wreck was so that Vicki could go back in time to 1795 (remember the seance). It was at this point that the writers decided to set the whole thing in the 1700's. This surely made Anthony George see red! There was no more realism to DS at all at this time now that Vicki had gone back in time and was living there! At least when Vic was in the 1960's it was a little credible. It was probably at Anthony George's insistence that the character of Burke was seen in bodybag (which wasn't actor George himself but a stand-in) to hint to viewers that maybe the farfetched stoiryline of DS was just a dream. As for the show's popularity it was only popular at this time to a limited extent. George never most likely anticipated how cultish the show would become. To some actors acting in show that is nothing like real life is looney even if it does pay so-so.

I actually liked Burke #2 the BEST! He had better chemistry with Vicki, in my opinion.
