Hey Everybody,
I was just wondering if anyone has ever seen the Unsolved Mysteries episode about Helen Rose. She was a Native American that lived in Canada. When she was young she got in a fight with her dad and left to fight in World War II. I tried to find her story on the website, but it wasn't on there. The update on TV said that she was living in New York with her daughter and granddaughter. I was just wondering if anyone had some more information on the story. Like what tribe was she a part of and what did she do in the 50 years that she was missing? I thought the whole idea of the circumstances were intriguing. |

The update said that she was found and that a reunion was planned, and I think the reunion might be in another episode in an 'update' section, but I haven't seen anything about it.

I saw that segment a day or two ago and it struck me that I didn't remember the promised update. I don't think it exists.
My impression is Helen Rose probably wouldn't have wanted a high profile update or any publicity that went along. If she was intent on "you'll never see me again" and followed thru on that, she doesn't sound like the type who would embrace an emotional reunion, let alone one captured for national TV. Besides, that is an old episode and it might be too late. The segment said Helen Rose was born in 1925. She would be 80, if still alive, and the others from her tribe who appeared in the UM segment seemed to be her elders. |

My apologies for bumping such an old thread. I just viewed this segment for this first time. There was in fact an update stating that the night of the original broadcast (12/18/91), Helen Rose was located in Rochester, NY. She was immediately put in touch with her siblings. Per the Unsolved Mysteries wiki, her siblings have all since passed away, however, Helen stayed in touch with them until the end. Sadly, Helen passed away just last year. She lived to be 98 years old.

That's not the same Helen Rose! The obituary says this lady was born in Chicago and was of Ukrainian ancestry. Not one line in there suggests that she was the Helen Rose who is the subject of this thread.

I never knew whether I was happier to hear she was found or irritated that she just abandoned her family for that long. Why did she not just come back after World War II and bury the hatchet? Any rift could have been healed with time.
At least she made peace with the family that was left for the last 25+ years of her life, but if I were one of the relatives still in Canada, I am not sure I could look at her the same way. |
