Default DVD recorder question

I recently purchased an Emerson DVD recorder. The other day I tried to convert a VHS tape to a DVD and the machine told me it could not do it. I am using DVD-R discs, which it said could be used on the machine. What is wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Is it the standalone recorder from Wal-Mart? Those won't work with any discs past 4x.

Is this a commercial/store bough tape, or one you recorded yourself? If the former, then it sounds like copy protection.

It's a tape from my daughter's dance recital. The Tab is still on the tape if that helps at all?

hi, i have had personally recorded tapes of the kids that my dual deck said it could not record the data. most of the time if i record that tape onto another tape and then to dvd that works. i have also used another vcr connected to the dual deck and that worked. thanks

What BeefyBoyGod said is probably correct. I have an Emerson DVD/VCR recorder combo, and found that I can only use 4x or lower - even though the documentation doesn't specify speed limitations.

I am very naive when it comes to DVD recorders, what does it mean 4x or lower?

When you buy DVDs the disc or the packaging will state "1x", "2x", "4x", "8x", etc. (Speeds are pertinent to high speed burners.) However, I haven't found that my Panasonic recorder is bothered by any of the speeds.

Have you tried to copy another video and then go back to the dancing one? (I don't have an Emerson... this is just an idea.)
