Default Opinions on Trading Equality

Hi,

Just wanted to gather some thoughts:

When you trade dvd, do you try to do dvd for dvd or hour for hour?

Reason I ask, is that if someone wanted my The District 89 eps, I dvd'd them at 2hour speed, therefore, it would require 45 discs for the set (quality would obviously be very high since these are coming from directv straight to dvd in SP speed). Would you give 45 discs in return or would you find 89 hours in return??

I don't know the right answer and I can see from both points of view, but what is a fair middle ground?

Tom

you can go round and round on that one

i like the disc for disc method

heres why

i have two sets of highway patrol

one on 12 discs -------13 hours per disc

one on 39 discs-------4 hours per disc

under the episode--hour method

it would be fair to trade one for the other, since they are both 156 hours of tv shows

if anyone wants to make hours trades like that one, ill send you a list

for myself, i would like to have everything on 2 hour speed. i still get somethings by the hour with certain folks, and i always will choose the two hour speed

if i want a set with less discs, i can compress them in half pretty simply

i recently did that with my fugitive set, it has 60 discs, well thats a little much for most folks to trade for or purchase, so i made it a 30 disc set, and now its quite tradeable, since not many folks have the ability to swing 60 disc set ..

did the quality suffer, a little, but you need to balance the quality with the budget.

Default DVD for DVD

If I trade 20 SP discs for 20 LP/SLP discs, the other guy's getting better quality, while I could very well end up with something untradable, which has happened to me too often. On the other hand, I've gotten some terrific sets that are LP.

To be safest, when I have a choice in the matter, I trade DVD for DVD, rather than hour for hour. This method is fairer/safer in the long run.

Above all, I hate surprises. I had one trader, new at making DVDs, prepare me LP discs, rather than SP discs as planned, thinking he was doing me a favor because he'd been told that "there's no difference between SP and LP". He received SP discs from me, while I received an equal number but in LP mode. (He'd put other things onto the discs that he thought I'd appreciate.) I was very disappointed, but chalked it up to experience.

Time schmime, that's as passe as VHS. Disc for disc only. For one, if you're duping discs in a computer or duplicator it's impossible to change/custom-make them after the fact. And the chore of re-authoring individual shows from various discs onto new discs is out of the question so far as I'm concerned.

I have rarely done this, but if I'm on the LP receiving end of such a trade and the other person doesn't think it's fair, too bad for them. We can just not trade if they prefer (I'd have to be digging pretty deep into someone's list trying to find something, to trade for to even consider LP discs in the first place so if I get blown-off it's probably just as well). And if it's the other way around and I'm sending twice as much time in LP, I don't have a problem with that. But no way would I ever, or expect someone else to, spend twice as much time (it takes just as long to dupe a 4 hr LP disc as a 2 hr SP disc) and money (twice the # of discs, twice the postage) as the other to even out time.

Yes, I too find that LP doesn't always suck, only usually, and it's always a gamble.

Default Thanks!

I didn't want to come right out, but I agree, I like disc for disc, that way, even on the amount of work involved. And I agree with LazyGrae, too hard to reauthor discs, not worth it to me.

No wonder, we all get along in our trades!!

Tom

btw, pioneer dvd was giving me a little bit of a hard time at first about this. I am cancelling this trade here and now, just not worth it, so here is the "public" notice, I will now send email to them privately. I am just trying to head off any public feud.

I personally prefer to do things hour for hour, but that's my own personal preference. I also don't trade DVDs yet, so I don't know if that makes a difference in my opinion.
