Sad Actor Lane Smith has died

Lois & Clark Actor Lane Smith Dies
It is with great sadness that we share the news that actor Lane Smith, who many fans recently became re-acquainted with on the Lois & Clark DVD set, has died this morning at the age of 69.

Smith had suffered from ALS in his later years. To fans, he will always be remembered for his portrayal of Perry White in all four seasons of Lois & Clark.

Here is the statement we received from a family member:

Hi and thanks for your concern and good wishes and prayers. We are sorry to tell you that my Uncle Lane Smith died earlier today, a blessed relief from his ALS. Thank you so much for your support.

From the Family of Lane Smith

Stay tuned to K-Site in the coming days for a more fitting look back at Lois & Clark's favorite "Chief."

I read this at the tv.com forum and thought it was a joke. He was a great actor and will always be remembered. I hope he is at peace now.

I read about this at another message board but I couldn't find no headlines about it anywhere. He was a great actor and his role of Perry White will live on forever. R.I.P. lane.

I just started watching the show (through the DVDs) and noticed he wasn't interviewed on the DVD. I wondered then if he was sick or gone. Then today at work, a fan of the show, who knows I just bought the DVD told me about his death.

'Lois & Clark' actor Lane Smith dies at 69

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lane Smith, a longtime character actor who played a small-town district attorney who crossed words with Joe Pesci in "My Cousin Vinny," died Monday. He was 69.

Smith, who also played Richard Nixon in the TV movie "The Final Days" and Daily Planet editor Perry White in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," died at his home in Los Angeles, according to his wife, Debbie Benedict Smith.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Smith appeared in numerous films and television shows. Most recently, he appeared in the 2000 movie "The Legend of Bagger Vance," starring Will Smith and Matt Damon.

Lane Smith also appeared in the original stage production of "Glengarry Glen Ross" and the revival of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

Film credits include "The Distinguished Gentleman," "Son in Law," "The Mighty Ducks" and "The Hi-Lo Country."

Besides his wife, Smith is survived by his son Robbie, 18, and a brother and sister. He also has a 19-year-old stepson.
