Music Huey Lewis and the News: Rock and Roll Hall of Famers

San Francisco's ultimate eighties power pop band, Huey Lewis and the News, will be eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame either next year or in 2007. They created a lot of enjoyable, lightweight pop, but little else. Do they belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Pros:

"The Heart of Rock and Roll" came from something one of the band members said after a concert in Cleveland, Ohio - "The heart of rock and roll is in Cleveland." Bingo!

"Heart and Soul" and "Workin' For a Livin'" are decent songs.

If they get inducted the same year as Weather Report, the MC at the induction ceremonies will be able to say, "Here's Huey Lewis and the News with the Weather Report!"

Huey purports to like the blues.

The video for "If This Is It" is so damn funny!

Cons:

"The Heart of Rock and Roll" doesn't list Chicago in its rundown of musically rich cities, and it substitutes Baton Rouge (!) for New Orleans to (sort of) fit the rhyme scheme.

And while we're at it, who calls Philadelphia "the Liberty Town?" I come from a Philadelphia family, and no one calls it that! ("The Big Scrapple," yes. "The Liberty Town," no.)

"Bad Is Bad" really is.

Huey is a doofus of sorts, and his drummer looks so uncool.

"Hip To Be Square" is an endorsement of conservative, middle-class values. Yeech!

"Do You Believe In Love" is really, really, really annoying.

Their music sounds perfect in T.G.I. Friday's or Applebee's.

What have they done lately?

Any thoughts?

You hear that sort of thing in a lot of places. That's not my milieu. Rock and roll is good-time music. I love rock. So did my parents.

Okay I will jump into the pool here!

No I don't think they should go into the HOF, but I do think the critics hate them less than Journey, and they will make it in before Journey.

I hate Huey Lewis and his News.
If they allow this guy into the Rock Hall of fame, then they will have to allow everyone.

I believe this can only open the door for other artists such as Ray Parker Jr, Robert Palmer and Nipsey Russell.

Red face

Here's something in his favor that might get him in:

Rock groupie Pamela Des Barres spent a little *time* with him and avers that he has a BIG, BIG....

heart of gold.

ROTFLMAO Captain!

The biggest thing in their favor for me is that--courtesy of the movie "Back to the Future"--their song "The Power of Love" is the closest thing to "our song" that my TOTALLY unromantic husband and I have ever had LOL! (We went to that movie on our first date.) After we got married, "Happy to be Stuck with You" was added to that VERY short list LOL!

Maybe I AM square, but I always like Huey Lewis! I thought they were a big part of the 80s and just the fact Huey and his music was featured in Back To The Future will link him forever. I think he should get in. I also think Journey and Robert Palmer should be in there too (Palmer actually did a lot of good stuff in the early 90s that didn't get recognized properly).

I'm surprised at some of the names already inducted while others aren't. God knows how they go through the process.

Nipsey Russell......ah....no!

I used to like em, but Hall of Fame? I might be walking on a thin line, but I vote No.
