Both Decisions by Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson were Stupid after Leaving S&S - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Demond Wilson-decides to star in a Sitcom in Spring of 1978 to play a Deadbeat Father who left his Family and returned 7years later and wanted to be apart of their life again.

Redd Foxx-Decides to do a Variety Show on ABC-lol

At that point of the 70's, Variety Shows was no longer a Big Thing to watch and not many Viewers was eager to watch a Deadbeat Dad Walk in the Door seven Years Later and say-"BABY I"M BACK" after walking out o them. Neither One of them never had another Hit. It was all downhill from 1977.

Redd's last show Royal Family was doing quite well with Della Reese in the costarring slot. It really had the makings of a big hit, but Redd had a heart attack on the set, this show also involved Eddie Murphy behind the scenes, so that helped immensely.

Agree on Demond, he never achieved the success of Sanford & Son.

I believe Demond became a Reverand after his shows failed.

Grady didn't succeed because it went up against a Hit show on Thursday Nights called the Waltons. Sanford Arms didn't succeed because Aunt Esther is not a character to watch for 30min.

Maybe Wilson wanted to prey to the Lord to get a successful show. His others at the time were flops.

S&S could have gone on for much longer than 6 years. At least 8. And knowing how Lear prolongs his shows (All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place are prime examples), it would have made it to the 80s.

One of the problems with the spinoff mentality is that you have something that's a hit in terms of ratings and well-liked creatively by its fans. As soon as these shows achieve success, the network is already looking to fix what definitely aint broke by spinning off characters into their own shows.

And other networks, envious, try to lure the stars away by offering them big contracts, in some cases, creative control and whatever they bloody want.

Ultimately, it can dilute the show and spinoff supporting characters who aren't necessarily strong enough to be the leads in their own shows. Some characters are better off as support.

I just don't see how S&S could have gone on past 1977. The show ended at the right Time

I have never seen the last episode. Was it a proper finale? I know it had something to do with Fred going back to school.

It was season Finale, and it dealt with Fred getting his High Diploma

and they never explained what happened to Janet. When Sanford Arms came on Fred and Lamont had moved to Arizona and in Sanford Lamont was working on the Alaska Pipeline. I guess she dumped him.

Come on Sonny,-lol You know Sanford and Son only had 2 spinoffs, Grady and Sanford Arms. Sanford was a Remake, not a spinoff
