Well, since this was a popular UM story...
In the summer of 1985, I was living in Southern California (still do) as his spree was going on. I was only nine, and remembered being scared witless. Most of his stuff was happening in LA, and I was in Orange County. Then one night, he came here. We turned on the news one morning to see he had struck right around the corner from where I was living. We all freaked. And there was this vacant house two doors down from us, where everyone thought he might be hiding out. Us kids would tease each other, "Dare you to go into the Night Stalker house. Chicken, bock bock!" Then right before school started, I still remember the night the local news put up an old mugshot of him with the ID numbers at the bottom. "The Night Stalker suspect has been identified as Richard Ramirez." The next day there he was in a squad car, with a bloodied bandage around his head. The panic was over, but a lot people had either lost their lives or had them changed. What brought this to mind was one of those unexpected ironies the other day. I canvass neighborhoods for a company and where do they assign me? Chrisanta Drive, where he struck that time I was living around the corner. I'm thinking what are the chances I'd end up here exactly 20 years later? And ultimately it happened, I walked right past the exact house. It still looked the same and sent a cold chill for sure. So I just had to hear anyone elses memories of that summer, either living around here or across the nation. |

That was kind of unique the way that case ended in capture, if the movie depictions are accurate. Ramirez saw his picture splashed on the front page of every newspaper in a small grocery store in a Hispanic section after returning to LA on a bus. He was recognized before fleeing the store and eventually cornered by locals, some of them beating him like aspiring vigilantees before rationale thinking prevailed and he was merely subdued until police arrived. The sad part was the mayor of San Francisco, maybe Dianne Feinstein, gave away a key police secret regarding the unique brand of shoes the suspect wore. That apparently led Ramirez to simply change his shoes and he committed more murders after that point.
