Default Learning Disabilities

When I was younger ,in the 7th grade I was "labled" with a Learning Disabilty. That was in 1977 I moved to a small town this school had classes for people with learning disabiltys, but people ( mostly, kids) would make fun I was in JR high,The special ed classes did not teach me well. I have a hard time with math ,but all other subjects I am good at. Have the schools come along way with special ed classes in schools?

Not really. My cousin was in one of those classes. It didn't help him to learn because the teachers would just write down the answers for him and pass him.

I don't know about public schools, however the college I'm at helps ALOT. I am considered a student with a learning disability because of my depression and the way it has affected my memory. I got hooked up with the office accidentily, but since then, they have been a GREAT help. I have tutors if I need it, I get extra time for assignments, I take my tests in a seperate location from other people where it is quiet and I can concentrate, I also get extra time for my tests. The best thing for me though, is being able to use a "memory aid" (notes) on my tests.

They really help you out on the college level.

I don't think so. In my high school the special ed classes are kept away from the others, and they have no interaction with the other students. Talk about casting them out.

That's horrible!!! I don't know much about the special ed classes here since I don't have kids, but I know that they fully integrate them with regular classes and the rest of the shools. Some of the kids have quite severe mental disabilities too, but they all work it out and its really important for both types of kids to interact with each other. They're an important and vital part of the community.

Well I've got ADHD, and I suck at math. In high school, I had to take a remedial class, but that was about it.

my brother has that and he's dyslexic (sp?).. anyway, that's all they do w/ him, just stick him in a lower level class. he's an ass though, with or without the "disease", so i say screw him

we have a department people are suppose to go talk to if they have a disability, dunno how much good it does though

Same at my high school. I was a T.A. for a special ed class in eigth grade and the teachers were really nice. They were really attentive to the students and gave the same assignments, but wanted the kids to have different goals. Basically, she didn't treat them like they were all the same. In high school, there are so many programs available, not just for people with learning disabilities, but for everyone. It's a chance for people to make friends.
