Man entering courthouse caught with drug stash

WILMINGTON (AP) — The man who walked into the New Hanover County Courthouse can't say he wasn't warned.

Authorities said Jermelle Monte Canty, 20, entered the courthouse Wednesday afternoon with 14 bags of marijuana and 10 bags of heroin stuffed into his pockets, despite signs telling visitors that they have to pass through a security checkpoint. He rounded a corner and spotted the metal detector, which meant he would have to empty his pockets to get in.

"He didn't have much of a poker face," said New Hanover County Sheriff's Lt. Joe McCarthy, the security coordinator for the courthouse.

"He came around the corner, saw the security checkpoint and all of a sudden he had this big sign flashing on his face, 'I've got dope, I've got dope,'" McCarthy said.

The lieutenant said Canty saw the metal detector and then said, "I've got to go to the car."

McCarthy said the man tried to work his way through the line of people entering the courthouse, which is a one-way entrance, but deputies caught up with him. At first, Canty said the drugs weren't his and he didn't know how they got into his pockets. Then, he said they were for personal use. He also said he was at the courthouse to pay someone else's fine. Canty was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and heroin and placed him in the county jail in lieu of a $25,000 bail.

What the hell did he think he was going to do with the drugs in a courthouse - sell them to jurors or something?

I've seen the Darwin Awards and heard of a lot of boneheads in my day, but this goofball takes the cake!

Don't you only have to empty your pockets if the metal detector beeps?
What does he lace his drugs with, metal shavings?

No - they look for people who also look nervous, are looking around like they have something to hide. That's what this goofball did with trying to flee.

Same with a road block on a road - if you try doing a U-turn - be prepared to have a cruiser pull up behind you soon after!

It does strike me as odd that they went after him. Does a person have a right to turn around and not enter a courthouse? I guess they thought he had a gun or a bomb? I mean, they're not narcotic agents. I'm having trouble explaining what I mean. Anyone know what I'm trying to say?

Yup - but have you ever seen "Midnight Express"??? He starts sweating, shaking, etc. when he sees the soldiers even after passing security before he hit the tarmac.

They also mention he didn't have the best poker face - he must have been showing signs of freaking out and that's when they get really suspicious! That's why it takes some nuggies to be a mule.

And yeah, they do have the right to stop you.

Yeah, I got that part. But unless he laced his pot with metal shavings why did he freak out when he saw a metal detector is what I'm saying?! I mean, he must have been cool & collected enough(or thought he was) to think that he was going to waltz into a courthouse with pockets full of drugs in the first place, in the midst of probably hundreds of cops.
Ah, well, who can figure these morons out.

He knew he'd have to empty his pockets at the metal detector - and with that many bags in his pockets, it wouldn't be easy!!

As Janice says - just all the more stupid it shows he is!!

Although I knew two friends of a defendant one time who sat through their buddy's trial playing make believe shoot out in the audience area! That's going to bid well for their friend when he was up on assault with a deadly weapons charge! Guess that's why these morons end up getting caught in the first place - they're not overly bright to begin with!
