I knew (wouldn't so much use the word "friend" because I don't think he was one) a 20 year old who lives near me. We've been talking since maybe Christmastime, but however, everytime he wants to hang out, it's always when he needs something to be benefitted that he wouldn't from someone under 21 or uninsured.
Once, I decided to let him drive my car with me in it because he had a permit but no license, and he seriously took advantage of me being nice enough to let him drive, that he put over 100 miles on my tank with me in the car one day, needless to say I was pissed. However, he's been on my case many times begging and pleading me to take him to go get his drivers license, because his parents live in another state and I am the only over-21 he knows who actually has drivers insurance (I had no idea so many people drove uninsured until I found out about his sister and 2 other friends). I know what he's up to asking about that, so I've constantly told him no, and he's constantly tried asking again. Last night, for the second time in a row, he asked me if I wanted to go to the club here. He claimed it was because "we don't hang out much anymore and I'd like to talk more", but I knew that he just needed me because I'm over 21, and the only way to get into the club here if you are 18-20 is if you bring a 21+ sponsor, and he got furious and blocked me because I finally called him out over the type of person he is. I've had friends who have known me and talked to me ever since I've met John (yea, his name was John too) who thought I did the right thing finally telling him the truth, and thinking that he is nothing more than a user who likes the advantage I have because I'm over 21, insured, and nice enough in the past to say yes when he asked for something. |

Well, you're better off without him. He's not a real friend. I'll bet if you had a problem and needed someone to talk to, he wouldn't be there. I had this one friend who only called me when she needed a babysitter or her car broke down and she needed a ride somewhere, but whenever I wanted to hang out or just needed someone to talk to, she was either sick or had to work, always some excuse. I hardly talk to her at all anymore. I can't stand people like that.

I've had friend like that too. They're there for you only when its convenient for them. This is the exact reason why I have few friends. I can't be bothered with stuff like that. But anyway, I think you did the right thing by telling him the truth. They need to hear it at some point. |

He sure doesn't sound like much of a friend, John. You're better off not hanging out with someone like that.

You did the right thing. I know what its like to be walked over, people take advantage of your niceness and its not right.

I have some "friends" who do kind of the same thing, and it is very irritating, so I do think you did the right thing. Good job.

I really hate people like that. And nothing ever gets through to them unless you do call them on it. Then they get all pissed off and suddenly you're the bad guy when you did nothing wrong. I hate them all.
And it's scary driving around so many uninsured motorists. |
