Default The Ratings for this show doesn;t match the 2005 Hype of the DVD-lol

I been hearing so much hype about how good this show was and it's a classic but i saw that in the last 3 seasons of this show, the show did not finish in the top 25.

So my question is was this show cancelled by CBS or did the actors decide to end it? If it was cancelled then I'm really going to be confused at why this show DVD is being so hyped up.

I think Bob Newhart decided to end it.

Your point would be more valid if the dvd was from one of those last three seasons. I don't think how the show ended is connected to the interest in the first season dvd set.

Yes, Bob did want it to end and that's why the last show was a "wrap up" - not like they just pulled the plug. I think the ratings dropped around that time as it had pretty much run its course really. They maybe could have had Bob and Emily adopt a baby or something, but really don't know how much they could have got out of that, while still focusing on Bob's career.

Also, around that time, sitcoms were changing - trying to appeal to a younger audience. The variety show was also huge and I think replacing a lot of older sitcoms.

Believe me, if you haven't watched this show - treat yourself. It might take you a couple of eps to get into the characters, and I know what you're going to say already about Howard, but give him a chance!

Watch for Bob's classic phone call on each episode!

The network WANTED the Hartleys to adopt a baby. But Bob said he didn't want to do the classic baby jokes or have kids on the set a lot. From my memory, there were some episodes in season 6 where you didn't see Bob all that much, either - he wanted it to end after 5 seasons, but they dragged it for another season.

A Howard fan,
Donna

when they showed him the script for the "baby episode" that they wanted to do, he said "Fine. But who are you going to get to play my role?"
