Default Characters who left without a trace

Over the course of the series, there were quite a few characters who left the series without any explanation. And once they had disappeared, they were never referred to or heard of ever again. They seemed immediately forgotten. The first character I recall to do this, was Frank Lorenzo. It seems he only lasted one season before he just disappeared. His wife Irene remained for a few more seasons, but it was never explained as to why we never saw her husband again.Midway through season 6,Irene,like her husband Frank before her, left without a trace or explanation, and seemed forgotten from then on.Except we know that her portrayer,Betty Garret, had joined the cast of Laverne & Shirley as Edna Babish/Dofazio.

Theresa first appeared in the season 7 episode"The Operation",before she temporarily moved into the Bunker home, against Archie's approval,as a border, later that season.Near the end of that season, she also vanished. We never even saw her leave.

In Archie Bunker's Place, there were two more characters who seemed to leave without a trace.Mrs.Cambie and Veronica Rooney had both disappeared by the last season.

As I mentioned in a topic that had recently been posted on the"Mama's Family"message board,my guess is that maybe character actors disappear like that when they don't care for their roles. It could be a bunch of other things too,who knows.

Frank's absence was explained. When the Lorenzos first arrived on the scene, it was mentioned that Frank was a retired travelling salesman. After Vincent Gardenia left the show, Irene occasionally mentioned that Frank gone back on the road. However, I believe that those mentions have gotten cut out of the syndicated reruns over the years (and they only happened a few times anyway). Irene herself did disappear without any mention.

When Murray returned for a visit in the last season of "Archie Bunker's Place", he called into the kitchen to Jose and Raoul, "Hey, I bet you miss Veronica back there."

Another one who disappeared without explanation: Archie's friend Hank, who appeared in the later years of "AITF" and was a semi-regular for the first year of "ABP".

I think in the very first season there was episode with a neighbor named Clara. I think she was returing a cooking pot she borrowed from Edith. Clara acted real monotone. I wondered if they had plans to make her a semi-regular and it didn't work out. She was played by Holly Irving who is mostly remembered for being in the movie "Frogs."

I wondered whatever happened to Szabo (spelling) and Uncle Cas.

We never found out what happened to Barney's first wife, Mabel, either. She was never seen on screen, but she was mentioned a few times early in the series. Later on, I thought the writers changed her name to Blanche, and the change was just a continuity problem.

But a couple of years ago, I saw an episode (can't remember which one) where Barney was telling Archie something about his wife. Archie said, "Mabel?" And Barney, exasperated, said, "No - Blanche!" So apparently there was not a continuity problem at all. Barney and Mabel's marriage did end at some point -- we just don't know when or why.

there was also that other black couple who moved into the Stivics old house in one of the final "A.I.T.F." episodes-I think their names were Ed & Polly. They showed Polly in one scene in the "A.B.P." episode about Ediths death, and as far as I know they never showed her again, and her husband was just in 1 or 2 "A.I.T.F." episodes, as far as I know.

Actually, it was her house that the Lorenzos moved into. Her name was Clara Weidemeyer (sp.), and it was the Weidemeyer house that was being sold. I think Edith also mentioned something about her moving because of the weather. They asked her (Edith) where she moved to, and she said the Bronx.

Hola!

Archie never seemed to be the type that enjoyed any outsiders coming into his house. Edith liked guests, so you would see Frank and Irene, Louise Jefferson and others. Usually they just stayed out of Archie's way.

As an aside, I agree with Archie about Frank Lorenzo, what an annoying man!
