Default How do you convince a mother to stop worrying?

I'm leaving town in about a month. I'll be staying in an apartment that sounds really good. It’s close to work, and it’s really beautiful. It’s not the safest neighborhood in town, but it’s the best I can afford, and better than others. Still, it’s caused my mother quite a bit of trouble.

My adult cousin who already lives in the city has promised to look after me and has even gone as far as checking out apartments to see whether they seem safe.

My parents have raised me to be responsible and safe. I have a decent amount of common sense and I've promised to lock the doors and not wander around the streets at night. I don't drink and I'm careful about the company I keep.

Despite all this, she is still killing herself with worry! I know she would rather me not go, but she wouldn't say it because she knows what a precious opportunity this is. She understands it's something I have to do, and I wouldn't pass it up for the world...

I understand it’s a mother’s sovereign right to worry. I just want some way to ease her concerns. She’s always getting her nerves all twisted over something, mostly things of little importance. I don’t want to add to her gray hair over this.

Advice?

All parents are like that. How far away will it be from her? Maybe you could have her spend a night or 2 within the first week or so, so she knows youre gonna be alright?

Tell her to chill out, and remind her that you're an adult.

How to keep a Mother from worrying?!
That's a good one Max!

The answer? NEVER!

Seriously, it will take time but in time she will settle down.

Marlene's right - you'll NEVER get her to stop worrying completely! You could be 56 and you're always going to be her baby!! Gotta just get used to it!

I did. In gentler terms. It didn't make a difference. She's still convinced she's releasing me into some god-forsaken hell-hole.

I tried that when I went to summer camp. It didn't work...

It's roughly 580 miles, only two cities over. I'll still be in Texas. My father is also concerned, but he's not letting it eat him up. They're both being very supportive.

It wouldn't be so bad if the only time she worried was on an occasion like this. This I understand. But she's made a habit of worrying about everybody, on many occasions. I'd rather not add to that, if I could help it.

I hear ya! I got a mother-in-law like that! She's the worst worrier in the world! Her sons are 47 and 44 and if they don't phone her like at least 4 times a week and see her at least once a week she freaks! She'll even phone to see how our dogs are doing!!
